Progress; made a base plate some time ago to have a couple of options for what I want to run in the back. I'm sticking to no swingout and I'm stubborn about it :peep:

Compressor will go in a sound insulated metal case, possibly higher or in the opposite corner away from the panel. Need to keep the heat down and the noise to a minimum.

Two levels of drawers on both sides below the centerline of the tire should be plenty of room.

Bottom drawers will be more narrow than the top

A while back when working on the base plate I thought I might just leave it stained, but it will probably get some MLV and a bit of carpet to dampen noise.

Each of the marked locations will have a .5250" Delrin spacer with a 10mm bolt run into a rivnut. Chucked up some scrap and voila....

Starting to get a bit too lost in the details, but eager for the outcome.

I'm excited to see this come to fruition. I've never seen anything like this so I am curious how it will turn out. I'm sure it'll be great with your attention to detail.

@AssBurns Man, that's a huge compliment. In a way I look up to all of you 'more wise' adults and garner some inspiration from what I see out there. This is something I've had in my head for a while, but have yet to see an example of. Hopefully over the Christmas holiday I'll get further along into validating the concept. Definitely no shortage of recycled materials, so I am making use of it and trying to keep the cost at $ free.99

Well, it works! Used the rear seat latch to tie into the frame and add a support brace. This is will function as the structure for the 12v "cubby" which will now be fully carpeted. Powder coated panel wasn't cutting it.

The back brace is also going to function as the main structure of the tire cradle and auxiliary battery box.

Well.... I've been driving around for about a week to figure out if I was wasting my time on this concept. The tire is rock solid without any lateral support from the structure that will be there as the drawer sides. This tire H-bar strap is unnecessarily beefy and I love it.

I'm excited that this actually works, and I'm looking forward to not having a swing-out on 'keiths bumper.

More on that tomorrow

That's awesome. If I could give up the cargo area I'd do something similar and ditch the swing out. Unfortunately I still need it.

While it would be nice to have that space, I can drive worry free that anything on a swing-out would fail due to that much weight constantly bouncing from the vibes. I prefer for the rear end to be a bit stiffer over small bumps, but plush on bigger hits and G outs, so its better that there is not anything with the potential to rattle apart or crack.

I sound like a paranoid schizophrenic when I talk about tire carriers.... :der:

Yeah I get it. My swing out was a poor design but I got it cheap as fuck. It's wobbly and it's caused some body damage.

Back after a bit of a hiatus it seems....... The VanGoh is Vangone and we are back to daily driving the 4Runner for a bit. I think I needed this. The Transit was awesome, but I had the opportunity to sell for nearly what I had in it. Good things coming. The new daily will be a 1996 Toyota, much like my first love. She's unique though. It will be a week or so until we make the short trip to pick it up, but I am excited nontheless...

This old girl shares everything from the frame down with the 3rd Gen, so you will see a lot of it in the months to come. I think it is deserving of its own thread for sure. @eimkeith I'll have to put in a FAT order with you here shortly.

Starting to get a spare parts list together. The plan is to start collecting 3.0 TD parts to have on hand in order to do the scheduled maintenance down the road without much down-time waiting for parts. Partsouq and Amayana are essentially wholesale distributors for OEM Toyota parts. I have a few things coming from Partsouq.... Economy shipping from Dubai is about a week and the pricing on genuine parts is next to impossible to beat.
Partsouq.PNG

Parts list as of now:
Fuel Injection / Pump Parts
- Timing Control Valve Solenoid
- Spill control Valve
- Glow plugs
- Fuel injectors & o-rings
- Fuel Filter Element
Intake
- Air Filter
- Manifold Gasket
Exhaust
-EGR Block-off plate(EGT gauge)
-Boost Tee
Cooling
- Water Pump
- Viscous Fan Clutch
- Aluminum Radiator
- Finned Auto Trans Cooler
- Oil Pump/Filter housing gasket
Timing
- Timing Belt / Tensioner
- Rear main seal
- Timing cover gasket
- Valve cover gasket*
- Fan & Alternator belts
- Compressor & Crank belts

It is unlikely that I will do all of this right off the bat with it only having 100,000 miles on it, but a few of the maintenance items will get addressed right away. Most of these will be spare parts.

More to come....

Almost a year away. Yikes... well it seems like Fall is usually when I get to doing much of anything and in standard fashion, I've been busy (will only get more busy).

Working on getting parts sold to friends that have been asking, collecting some new parts, and getting to stripping things down.

In addition, I was asked to help with a Tacoma frame repair, and well.... it's too far gone. Under the knife it goes to get a rear-half. 2x3 (.188) tubing to bring back some structural integrity and set this up with air bags to carry a Scamper bed unit.

Something exciting. Finally getting to set a few things up to prepare for setting up 4 diffs in the immediate future.

Diff stand and a few other precision tools to get things right! Slowly but surely we will get to justifying more tools!

On another note... I've been building an FJ40 for/with a really great friend of mine who is getting into modifying cars. This is a bit different though. What started as a stock standard FJ40 from Ecuador had turned into us sourcing a fabricated 40 series chassis, sending the entire tub off for body work, selling the OG power train/drivetrain and I've been steadily working through a full axle rebuild from end to end.

The cherry on top? This will get a new heart. The R2.8 Cummins married with an H55 pushing 4.10's at final drive. Should I start a build thread of all the work that I've documented? It's not IFS

Back again to get going here with the next life for this truck. It has been a long time coming and I'm pumped for the current trend of making big things happen on a not so big budget!

I acquired a second axle housing that I stumbled upon and it came with some bonus parts.

• Axle housing w/ Marlin Crawler knuckle gusset & shock mount (had been in storage for the last 10 years) $150
- Not to mention this is a long truss OEM housing with an aftermarket upper truss
• Toyota Full Knuckle Sandwich rebuild kit included

The outer's polished up quite nicely and are essentially brand new, which is something that can't be bought for well over $500.

My other primary axle is complete from lockout to lockout, and in exchange for helping a friend, I scored a portable sand blaster and several large bags of ceramic glass media.... you can see where I am going with this. I have yet to spend big bucks on a lot of things that would set me back some crazy amount of money....

Media

The additional gussets and ancillary mounts are only tacked and primed. Everything comes off to get to the good stuff. +1.5" each side axle tube to widen 3" + IFS toyota hubs will widen another 3". I will be playing with the widening dims for this sleeve to match the rear track width.

Truss, mounts/gussets, and an unused drain plug to boot. I wonder how many miles it has seen in 40 years
