Realistically, What Tires Should You Run?

No love for this sticky in over 2 years?

I just put a set of skinnys on my Sequoia rims, 245/75 R17 Wildpeak AT3s for around the town/winter driving. I pussied out of fully committing, I know.

I've got a set of 16" rims that will get 255/85 R16 MTs for wheeling when the current Cooper's give up the ghost.

I'd like to stick with the narrowest contact patch possible/reasonable... any suggestions?

I'm convinced 35x10.5r17s were made for first gen Tacoma's. Easier to keep off the frame and get the benefits of a skinny with the height of a 35. I'm surprised I haven't broken a shitty parts store CV yet but I'm probably just getting lucky. I have ran it through heavy wheel hop with sharp steering angles without breaking yet. Truck is far from light but the front is unlocked.

Clearance with bumpstops removed - tubbed rear and hammered front both sides. trimmed fenders 3/4" and pocketed out the flares

Yokohama Geolandar M/T G003 LT255/85R16 E rated 123/120Q are what I'm leaning towards...

I run 255/80/17 Cooper discovery max on my 4runner. No regrets. The MPG didn’t take a big hit. They have handled great on snow and hardback desert wheeling.

I have Cooper STT Pro 285 75 17s on my Tacoma. Prior to that was Cooper ATP 265 70 17. Wife's Toyota Venza AWD is running Cooper CS5 Ultra. I like coopers and will be getting more when my tires wear out.

My Yaris doesn't have them, because the only Coopers in that size were snow tires and Phoenix don't get much snow.

I have a set of 265/75 R16 c-rated Coopers now that came on my 4WD. The are far from new but seem to do well

The Discover has a more aggressive tread and sipe pattern that the Fallens, I might look into swapping them out for 255/80 17s

That's what I'm running right now too on the runner and the Tacoma. 255s on the Tacoma though. I've got more miles on the runner tires, and my only complaint because they're E rated 315s, is the stiffness. If I don't air down enough things get slippery at higher speeds. Havent found a sweet spot yet but I've only had them in dirt like 3 times over the last year. Rig really hasn't done much since November.

How have they been wearing, will you get 40k out of them?
I got approx 50K from my 255/80 /17s ST Maxx . Last few thousand were rather loud. Had some uneven wear on the edges (cupping?) , but I think I can blame it on not checking alignment often enough.

On my current 285s, have over 33K so far. Still plenty of thread left, and they wear a little better (285s might be a better match for overweight taco) but they're getting louder already. Have to remember to rotate them soon.

Add my vote for the ST Maxxs. Had them on the Taco for 25k and now they are on my trailer
Looking at 5 for $1,353 delivered (255/80 R17) and $120 for install

Or should I just get 4 new and source a used one as a spare?

The real question is, where’s the spare going? It won’t fit in the stock location without making contact with the panhard. At least a 285/75/16 won’t, and a 255/80/17 is just as big in diameter if not slightly bigger

Well, eventually it will go on a rear tire carrier/swing out...

Figure it out when you get that carrier. I was going to do the same thing and here I am two years later and still no carrier.
The fuck you giving reasonable advice for? You're supposed to be enabling me...

I could theoretically keep my current 265/75 R16 spare, it's only 1.2" different in OD which is 0.6" on the road
