Meet CLPDOUT, my dedicated trail rig. After finishing my 2015 and hitting some of the harder trails in Phoenix and Moab it became overwhelmingly apparent that I wanted to hit bigger and harder trails. This is not as easily done in a 35k DD Tacoma.
So with the help of some close friends, we searched an purchased this 85/87 Toyota pickup.

I will be keeping a log of the whole build and experience as I grow and evolve with this rig.

From what we can tell by looking at the frame code is that this is an 85 4x4 chassis with an 87 cab and bed. The bed has been bobbed and dovetailed. The front has been angled and cut as well. There is a full cage throughout and the axles have been trussed.
The interior is gutted and a custom dash installed.
The battery was moved to the bed and the ignition has been replaced by a kill switch and toggle for the fuel pump and battery.

It was purchased with an issue in the drivetrain. Clutch, trans or tcase. We are still yet to pull it to diagnose.

Purchases and freebies so far:
Trail Gear tube doors - 200$
15" steelies - 70$

I got to shine the tire first. Get it a vaginal rejuvenation so she won't be so clapped out.

If I can't find a 1st gen runner, this is the pickup I'd gladly take for a crawler build. Just makes more sense to have a dedicated crawler over a SAS on the Tacoma or 4runner. Some day.

Crazy man didn’t know you lived in Phoenix as well. Reminds me of my buddies sas 89 runner on 37s although he isn’t tubbed in the rear. I’m sure this thing does work.

Agree but when you go to a a dedicated crawler new issues arise. Tow pig, trailer, storage, less dd, less creature comforts like ac or heat, doors, lol. The more crawler the more damage because you do harder lines(stupid lines). I took a line the other day that really made consider a 5 point harness in the Zuk or hey dumbass don't take that line.

Yeah, which is why I'm awhile off from having one and I'll keep bashing on my runner instead.

What issue are you experiencing with the drivetrain?

It's binding when the tcase is engaged enough to stall the motor. It also knocks at idle and when rolling. I only drove it off the trailer and parked it.

Last owner was recovering a friend off a trail and thought he blew the clutch. He drove it home and parked it. It's definitely leaking from the trans or tcase bad. Ujoints are completely fucked on the front driveshaft.
We haven't had time to pull it just yet but I hope to do that this weekend. The issue is definitely there between the clutch and tcase.

I have a w56 and tcase as a spare if needed. I'm just hoping it's not the tcase so I can use this spare as a 2nd.

Have you pulled out your front 3rd member? It actually sounds like a problem I had before with binding in the 3rd.

You should have a gear driven case since it is an ‘85 drivetrain. I have taken mine apart and I would say it is highly unlikely something in there is wrong. But nothing wong with pulling the cases apart to inspect ans reseal for leaks.

And you are better off using the spare as a crawl box. One word of advise, be very careful with the t-case since it is aluminum and it will crack super easily, then you are fucked. Do not over-torque any bolts on it.

As for the knock, put in a new oil pump and drop your oil pan to check all your bearings. Pulling the motor out is easier than any other vehicle I have worked on, as is checking the bearings. Not sure about your level of mechanical expertise, but the 22re is as straight forward as it gets for a novice.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions. I have become very acquainted with my ‘85.

Is the total going with you to Kentucky? What kind of wheeling do they have

Thanks, it's a 22r. The knock is definitely coming from the drivetrain. We are going to pull it all anyway.
I'm not really concerned about any of these repairs, it's just about the money I want to spend.
I'm buying used where I can. It's amazing what you can find for these old pickups.

Oh, I misunderstood about the knock. I thought you meant it was coming from the engine, on top of your drivetrain issues.

Just get square driveshafts and the clanking will drown out any other noises.
