Oh, I misunderstood about the knock. I thought you meant it was coming from the engine, on top of your drivetrain issues.

Just get square driveshafts and the clanking will drown out any other noises.

No worries, I wrote most of this build thread while pooping on the company dime. I wasn't that clear in my posts.

Didn't plan on doing the rear square yet, just the front. I've had it 3 weeks and I'm a real stickler for a budget and plan. Its not on a spreadsheet yet, but soon will be.

The way things are starting to look is that Im probably keeping my 2nd gen and use it to tow this pig. Unless I really can get what I want for the 2nd gen money wise.
The thought is go aluminum on the trailer. You can get a 1500lb trailer on dual axles capable of towing this truck for under $5000.
If this is the plan, it changes the build. I no longer need to register it and drive it to the trail as I first intended.
I will however probably need to lose the shackle flip for the inverted hangers and a better leaf pack on the 2nd gen. It's setup for droop now, not towing.

Planning. Decisions.

I just want to take the damn thing out already.

Do you have dual cases? If so, would you mind snapping a few pics of how it's mounted? I'm curious to see how it's clocked and how it sits.

We were discussing sliders or even boatsides. Currently the OEM xmember is the lowest point in the center. Just wanted to see if there is room for improvement in tucking them up. :)

Thank you

I vote boatsides! It’s a dedicated crawler. Don’t waste time with sliders

I also am a cheap ass when it comes to parts for the 85’. Love it when I find stuff cheap or used that I can save some money on. Have a shelf full of crap to install when I get the motivation to do it( f’in hate wrenching in the summer)
Currently piecing together dual cases

It was one hell of a find. I happened to just search Trail Gear in auto parts on Craigslist and the crossmember skid came up. I messaged the guy and there was one ahead of me. That guy backed out and he texted me today. I happened to ask what he was going to do and why he didn't need it. That opened a can of awesome deals for Jon.

Tomorrow we pull the transmission and tcase to see what's up.

Keep an eye on the pirate classifieds. A lot of old timers will post some really good deals on spare parts or shit that has been taking up space in their garage from old/abandoned projects.

I came up on quite a few goodies there, including the MC 2.28/4.7 duals for $900.

Updates:

Input shaft is broken. The good news is I've got another w56 from one of Brandons rigs and Stumbles has a tcase he pulled apart and is willing to sell.

Basic list of to do's and to buy's

Marlin 1600lb clutch -$160
Advance adapter dual case adapter - $320
2 transmission mounts-$?
4 fj80 tie rods - $120
Stumbles tcase - $$$
Jason's ifs rear and front ifs hubs- $$$
Steel to finish cage and sliders - 300$ (approx)
Hood - $50
FJ40 Rotors - $?

Drivetrain:
Assemble trans + tcases and install with the new skid and xmember.

Front:
Drill perches to move axle fwd 1.5-2"
Install rear leafs from 89. This will push the front an additional 2-3"
Install new ifs hubs - remove spacers
Pull of old steering and make a bracket for the new box
Mount new box
Extend steering shaft
Mount high steer and hydro assist
Install new rotors for the ifs hubs
Check clearances make any modifications for any kind of binding anywhere.

Rear:
Drop rear axle and swap in newer ifs.
Swap 3rds
Connect parking brake

Driveline:
Measure for drivelines and contact local shops for the work. I have a few options in Phoenix.

Misc and important stuffs:
Finish cage and mount spare tire
Install tube doors
Coat interior cab
Cut hood and pin to protect the motor and lines from the AZ sun.
Mount new steelies and look into making bead locks.

It's a fair amount of work but what I want to accomplish over the course of the next few months. At the same time I'm selling my house and moving.

This will be how I fund the rest of this project.

Once I'm in the new house I'll work out the trailer details.

You gonna have this thing ready for a shakedown soon?

So the HELOC will sign and fund by Friday. I'm not sure if I'm going to buy the stuff I need right away or not.

I think I'm going to talk to Zillow and OpenDoor 1st. Let's see if selling to them right away and moving does. That way I can free up all kinds of monies.
