Just get a 2wd for thousands cheaper and put a fuckin locker in it.

I've been trying to convince my company of this for ages. They buy 2wds because guys beat on 4x4s, but then we get stuck constantly.

Put a fucking 1200 dollar flipswitch locker in it for fuck sakes.

Why not put a locker in the rear of a 4wd and have the best of both worlds?

Trying to push a heavy diesel with a light ass is difficult in any condition. I will never willingly go back to a 2wd

In our case it's because guys beat on 4x4 trucks.

In my case it'd be because frankly, I'm not towing my offroad rig into a shit spot. I'm towing it to a good spot and then using it to go to the shit spot.

I agree the tow pig is for towing not overlanding.

For the most part, I agree. I'm not going to be crawling my tow truck into a crazy spot, but sometimes there is sand that is the enemy of towing a truck. I've had to pull out my dads motorhome more than once in various situations and it was always due to sand. Sometimes you don't realize how soft the sand is because you drive out there when the ground is wet from a rain but 3 days later when it's dry it is soft and dry. I don't want to be super limited on where I can go or rely on others to get myself out. For an extra few grand, I can avoid that situation almost entirely. We don't get into crazy spots when camping with trailers, but sometimes the sand is more than you expect depending on weather and location.

we know how to wrench, bonus box or make it a flat bed.
Gotta have 4 doors, but the idea is pretty cool. Imagine a big ass box truck and driving a truck into that thing!

unless you are getting 1 or 2-owner truck that you know didn't abuse it...I assume they are all driven like hell and parked, brakes still smoking. for a few grand... like @AssBurns said, imagine having a truck roll out the back. "lower deck for easy loading" haha

well unless you are a patient autottrader or Craigslist hunter, finding a good hauling truck that some old man was only using to bring home the xmas tree every year, at a decent price...it's a crap shoot. I hear ya slim, at that price point... it's an option. parts readily available, easy to work on. you know they go the distance without much drama. gm still does auto lockers on the HDs no?

GM's auto locker is 100% trash.

The G80 dogtooth is a fucky little POS.
Basically a fly weighted diddly fucker inside the carrier spins up with wheelspin and catches a pawl and magic happens, while it works. They're famous for locking and then simply not. . . Unlocking anymore.

Or locking mid corner. Or unlocking mid corner.

Good for a halfton that never sees full throttle or high chassis loads.

Ford has a good e-locker option in the super duties, and dodge offers (but doesn't advertise, and USUAL) a torsen style locking diff under the "Trutrac" name. It's the best of the available factory lockers, IMHO. Worm gear style that locks the spidergears with a full ramp rather than a dogtooth. No electronics to go wrong, tough as nails, fails open rather than locked.

It's a Detroit product, was originally developed for use in the Humvees.

Well suited to sand, since they engage nicely unless you're really railing on er, and unlock nicely as well.

Dodge had a TrueTrac in the 60s but it was just a clutch pack LSD.

Titan guys love the tru tracs. I never needed to swap it in cause mine magically didn't explode like the dana/nissan rear end likes to do. But yea, I've heard awesome things about those. My titan e locker was fun, used it few times. you could do a wire bypass and engage whenever but never bothered. I used the f250 e locker a few times already, super handy as well. true 4 wheel drive is neat lol.

Light duty tow rig conversion over the weekend. Ever since I caged my truck I don't like using it to pull my jetski. 4x8 trailer. Got my hidden hitch. You can't even tell it is there behind the knock out panel. It's fun having everyone give you weird looks at the launch ramp.
