Nice.

Speaking of recording tracks. I always use Backcountry Nav Pro on my Pixel XL. I have been looking at 8" tablets to use instead. Amazon had the Fire HD 8 for 50 bucks over Black Friday. I picked one up. Guess what 50 buck tablet doesn't have a GPS chip? FML. Lol

Yep I was looking at those Fire tablets a couple months ago and said nope when I found out they didn't have the GPS chip. This Samsung A worked perfectly. Pretty much lasted all day/night and didn't charge until the following morning when we got moving. Only died one night because I left the screen on too long (30 min timeout on full brightness) so it drained the fuck out of the battery before it timed out.

Buy This https://www.amazon.com/Dual-Electro...=UTF8&qid=1543884717&sr=8-3&keywords=dual+gps

Its what I use with my WIFi only Mini Ipad. It bluetooths the gps data to your mapping program. Though do some research and make sure it works with that tablet.

I was just looking at that yesterday. For that price I can just pick up another tablet that has GPS and use that in the rig. The Fire can stay in the house. It's not a bad tablet for the price and I'm an idiot for not verifying it had a GPS chip. lol

ok GPS spec requirement dully noted lol, now just I need to get a new tablet and decide which app to load on it before my January 2019 trip to Mammoth with the boys ( we will have 3 rigs total)

While im up there, I want to hit up Coyote Flats, Devils punchbowl or Inyo craters etc , any recommendations you can make considering that this is your backyard ? ( i might do these trails solo since the others might split after Mammoth)

so i had found a thread from last year on t4r where @AssBurns wrote up his impromptu Coyote Flats trip and you commented on how you were minutes away from that O'Reilleys out there.. that was you correct? (same name and avatar lead me to this conclusion lol)

I'm a Bishop local. Laurel Lakes will be out unless you have a VERY capable rig. It's fairly mellow in the summer but put 24" of snow over those rocks and it's a different beast.

All the stuff east of Mammoth should be fine. Anything heading west from Mammoth picks up elevation quickly and will have snow.

The Whites may or may not be passable up Silver Canyon off of 6 north of Bishop. It's gated about 3 miles in and is mellow all the way provided the gates open.

Coyote Flats is probably passable if your willing to deal with some snow. It's also pretty mellow if you come in and out the Bishop way. If you got out through Big Pine it's a little less mellow and you don't want any part of it if it's snowy.

Buttermilks loop will also be a maybe. It's picked up off of W Line St and Buttermilks Rd. It's about 13 miles of dirt to come out just south of Intake 2 on W Line St. It's fun but it get's up to 8500' pretty quick so snow may be an issue.

Other than that there's tons of dirt roads all along the Owens river. Mainly boring dirt but if you explore a bit you can usually get into trouble.

A lot of this will come down to how capable your rig is, how capable you are, and how hard you want to wheel. There's a but of everything here from super mellow to holy shit what did I just get myself into.

Thanks for this info. Yeah I dont mind dealing with snow as you say but I will definitely factor in the risk versus reward as I wont have another vehicle with me for security/ insurance. So ill plan accordingly now. (Will probably do Coyote Flats via the Bishop route as per your advice)

given your cred and knowledge, can you define what a VERY capable rig means in respect to Laurel Lakes? im curious to know what is required in contrast to the terrain out there.

Hahha. Keep in mind @theesotericone is dual locked and dual cased, his idea of capable may be different than the normal standard.

that is why I was asking given that capability standards are different.. Im curious to know what the benchmark is, in general, for a Very Capable rig.

@4runner DOA - you are front and rear locked with armor and a heck of a right foot, is your rig deemed very capable?

For me a very capable rig is fully skidded, sliders, bumper/winch, minimum of 33's and front/rear locked. I did a tom of stuff with my rig in that state. As mentioned below a lot of it also has to do with the drivers skill set. I've taken my rig when it was open/open to places that "require" a rear locker plenty of times. I also did it solo most of the time. I have self recovery tools and the skills to use them. If your rigs capable, if your a good driver and you can get yourself out of trouble you'll be fine.

Hit me up when you plan on coming up and I'll see if I can sneak away for a day of wheeling.

You can drive just fine. It's your skinny pedal power that get's you in trouble. lol

This!! ^^^^^

I'd say besides the standard stuff like good tires, F&R Lockers, Armor, Winch, etc.; a "very capable rig" has a lot more to do with the driver than the rig. But still the benchmark for "Very Capable" can be everything from a locker to a tube buggy that's dual cased on 42's. It all depends on who you are talking to.

Plans got modified, so rather than wheeling after the Mammoth trip, we are gonna wheel heading there with hopes of tent camping afterwardsthe same day
if you are available to hit some trails either Friday 4th or Saturday 5th let me know..

We will be Skiing on sunday, driving back monday.

Gonna be leaving OC at the ass crack of dawn on friday to be in your area at a decent time in the AM..

Looking forward to meeting and wheeling if this works out!
Cheers

Totally valid on all points with an emphasis on driver capabilities.. (just to humor you, VERY CAPABLE in Orange County has come to mean a hi-lift jack and maxtraxx on the roof and no sliders. Extra capabilities come with IG followers and what have you. This has become a touchy subject for some nowadays lol)

Mikey knows what's up. I watched him wheel some moderate type stuff in his 2wd unlocked 4th gen. When it got totaled he went to a 4wd 5th gen but didn't fall into the OC overland thing. When he's ready to bang it up, we'll be here to help him. Haha.
