Hi y’all during, so I have 3 sets of cv axles for gen3 4Runner and I’d like to reboot them as spares and to Keep oem cv axles alive. I watched tim’s Videos on this and I’m ready, but my axles have come apart. Nothing major just slipped out of the joint, so I can’t make match marks or know the factory orientation. How big a deal is that? Also any 520 people who’ve done this before ? Also, I’ve 5 oem cv’s that need reboot love and I only need two, so 3 up for grabs. Sell or trade for help/expert supervision. Post any tips or advice if you’ve done this, what wouldn’t you do again. Thanks everyone and happy Thursday.

I don't think its that big of a deal as long as you put everything in the correct orientation. Rebooting cvs is messy, but not difficult. Make sure you have a decent set of snap ring pliers and if possible replace the c clip on the end of the axle that goes into the diff.

Not familiar with that video. I haven't ever match the orientation whenever I rebuild CV's. Inspect everything for cracks, out of round cages etc etc when you have everything disassembled. I use a sturdy cardboard box to help spin and control the shaft when packing grease. It makes it so much easier and it's not as messy this way..

Cardboard box idea I like that. Will have to try on my next reboot.

Another thing, make sure you get the clamp tool for the boot bands. It makes life so much easier.

Thank y’all, I’m getting the materials together this week to do sometime soon. Are the oem boots the best for the inner or do those red ones work better? I made an o-ring from self sealing tape to mimic those I saw online that prevent the lobes from rubbing. I’m currently running a new Napa and an older oem cv with good boots, but I want to run fresh oem with any durability mods made so I can be done till it breaks(long time hopefully). Are the oem bands w/tool the best option or have y’all seen anything else that was a better idea? Either way I’m going to get the tool, new bands, boots, grease, and new c-clips. Anything else? Of course I’m going to double check before ordering and watch video again, but those photos and advice above is golden, like the box trick, awesome.

Boots usually come with the bands. I just use oem boots. I've had the red ones rip just as easily.

I'm in the same boat, I noticed doing the oil change on my 4runner that the inner boot cracked and decided to self lubricate the chassis.
