Check your frames! I've read for years that people have had their motor mounts crack and cave into the frame on some first and second year 2nd gen tacomas as well as a few FJs and t4rs. I can't speak to the FJ or tr4, but I can now say I'm familiar with the Taco. It seems that it was incorrectly welded and a major lack of gusseting from toyota. Toyota fixed the problem for '07 and up with a new design. They recognized the problem, fixed the problem and failed to mention it to the public. From what I've read, only 1 or 2 people have ever had any luck with getting a remedy from toyota.

I don't have any knowledge on the repair process yet but it seems somewhat straight forward. I've been wanting to gusset mine for years but never got around to it and now it's going to be a fix instead of a preventative measure.

I plan on ordering the gusset kit from DMZ. From what I can tell, I'll need to remove CV axles, steering shaft and most likely the front diff.

If anyone has any experience with any of this please chime in! Any other info, share it! Any tips or tricks, let's hear it!

i've had this happen to both of my motor mounts...meaning they were both fix's unfortunately. my drivers side was back in 08' if i remember correctly and way before DMZ had those gusset kits so had a local shop weld some plates to it, looks like a hack job but it's help up so far. Passenger side was 2yrs ago and had the DMZ gusset welded on by a legit welder.

I'm only 2wd though so i'm not sure about having to remove the CV's. I know the driver side is a bit tricky though because of the steering linkage, passenger side was an easy 10min deal.

Sounds like this is more common than I thought. Tim over at DMZ said he's done quite a few. Super helpful guy btw and great customer service! The cvs and lower steering shaft definitely need to come out. He said it's possible to do without removing the diff but it's almost impossible to do it well. I'll probably remove the diff regardless so I can get everything cleaned up in there and make sure it gets fully welded.

it is with the early model 2nd gens, especially if you wheel it or live by the beach. I need to quit dicking around and invest in a good welder and gear, there's been so much i could have done myself..this included at home. i'm sure it's a PITA to remove the front diff but sounds worth it to just get it all done right.

I only know of one t4r that had motor mount problems. If anything it was a 03-05 issue with those.

My 2006 2.7 MT has the ungusseted motor mounts that are still okay. I think it's due to the 2.7 being lighter and not putting out as much torque that helps slow down the mounts from caving in. I would still like to run the DMZ gussets just as a precaution but the motor mounts are different for the V6 vs the 4 cylinder. I spoke to DMZ and they said did a quick cursory glance and said it looks like the FJ mounts are similar to the 2.7 and they might be able to fandangle the FJ gussets a bit to make them work.

Mine were fine for years of wheeling, they aren't as bad as some that ive seen, pretty sure it was just a long time slow thing that happened. There's definitely a reason toyota corrected the problem. I say do it if you can!

Alex did you get the mounts ordered yet. If you didn't let me know. I might as well order them with you. Also do you have 220 outlet near the car port. My Lincoln welder is 220v. If not I'll hang on to my 115v a little longer . I am down to burn some metal.

Fuck brother it newer ends.

Yea they should be here tomorrow or wednesday. I'm going to borrow my buddy's millermatic 211 and my other buddy is going to burn them on. He just got two more aerospace welding certifications on top of a few others. Lol, the fucker builds rockets that compete with Elon musk. I have 220 in the laundry room but need a pretty long cord.

Well shit . Send your buddy my way cause I am positive that his welds will be way better than my shit. Lol. I have a 25 foot welding extension cord you can borrow. Check your 220 laundry plug. It probably a 4 prong. My extension cord is three prong . My laundry was four prong but I changed it to three.

Well I crawled under the Tacoma today and found that the driver side motor mount had been previously repaired. Not bad but not good. I'll be tackling this when I do the FJ t case swap since everything will be coming out anyway.

Any pics? If it was repaired before it might be fine. Also, you should check your transmission cross member. It's the other place that was prone to failure for the early frames
