I see you have stock LJ front coils on your 4-link. I recently scored a set and have been wanting to put them on my 5th gen just not sure how it'll handle the weight back there. How's the ride on yours? I don't "overland" and have been wanting the travel but keeping it low as well. May get into a 3-link later on as the factory setup looks like it'll eat the gas tank the more droop it has.

Not sure if they will be stiff enough for the rear of the 5th gen, but it could be worth a shot. I like them a lot. They are soft which helps the ride a lot, but definitely won’t be able to hold a lot of weight. Luckily I don’t put a lot of weight in mine. Have you looked into LC8 wraps at all? 8 wraps will provide 2-3” more lift than these on a 3rd gen, so they might give you the ride amount on a 5th gen. Where do you live? I have an extra set of 8 wraps you can borrow to test out if you want.

Interesting and LC8 wraps are stock fronts from an 80 series? Im over in NC so opposite coast. I could source some over here easily though.

That is correct. I think @eimkeith might have some nearby depending on what he is doing with that 80 series he just picked up. He is in NC too. They are easy enough to source though. I’m not sure the JL coils would give a 5th gen any lift. I’m somewhat heavy in the rear with a tire carrier, fuel tank, cooler and tools. Never really any more than that. I’m getting about 1” lift right now. In stock weight it would probably give about 2” lift. The 8 wraps are the same free height as the JL coils. Maybe about 1/2” taller actually. But they have a 180# spring rate, whereas the JL coils are like 140#.

What type of weight are you talking about? I'm speaking for 3rd gens here but most people that carry lots of weight in the back end up ditching the 8 wraps and going with OME 861's. They'll put your ass way up in the air if your not loaded. I run them and they're perfect for my rear bumper and tire carrier. I can also fully load my rig for multi-day travel and loose very little lift.

I'm not even sure that would work for a 5th gen. I have yet to see a 4th gen run LC coils. If he was on the right coast I've got both metal tech 3" heavy coils (think they're 300 lb) and 3" 400 lb dobinson coils he could try. With the amount of weight I carry I'll be bumping to the 3" super heavy coils

You are an overlander that carries a shit ton of weight. :flipoff:
The coils should fit the same as far as I know. I think the stock 4th gen coils give 3rd gens 1” of lift IIRC. So 8 wraps will probably give about 2-3” lift my guess. They are tall and soft which is really nice for comfort, but terrible for carrying extra weight.

I have a real rear bumper and a roof rack. :flipoff:

Are you sure the mounting dimensions are the same? You would think you would see the use more often.

Check yours and see. The pic of the spring on the floor is the JL front springs and the pic on the vehicle is the 8 wraps.

A spare tire and a bag of tools honestly. No maxtrax, RTT and six light bars here. What I’m trying to do is keep it low while still having the travel.

So on my 4Th gen I had the regular metal tech LT coils but it was too high in the rear at all times. Looks like the superflex coils would keep it low but then not flex like the metal tech ones do.

I ran the 2" MT coils until I added the rear bumper and it was about perfect. I tried the 3" MT heavy coils but they couldn't handle the weight so I stepped up to the dobinson coils and it's still a no go even with a 1.5" spacer. I bottom out like crazy on my bumps with the fridge and solo camping gear. It's worse when I'm fully loaded with everything that I bring when I have my son (full tent, cots, etc) on the roof rack.

so possibly the MT coils could get me where I want to be

Maybe. I've been through a lot of different setups. I'll need to get my ads shocks adjusted accordingly eventually. My biggest issue right now is finding the right rear coil for the height I want to handle the weight I have first.

I hear ya. Maybe I'll order up the regular MT coils and some 14" or 12" shocks and fab up some hoops depending on what the wheel wells allow and get as much travel as I can out of them.
