You've reach my little truck experiment. It's a long travel 1999 5 lug toyota tacoma that I've done pretty much all the work in my garage. I've learned how to build this truck by lurking build threads for years. It's not too pretty to look at and isn't a race truck by any means. Just a fun weekend desert truck that is pretty high maintenance.

This is the most current pics

Ran a roof mounted light bar up front for a few months. I reinforced under the mounts with plating. I didn't like it because it took about 3mpg away from city and hwy. Also my peripheral view was killed because it only shines forward. Plus huge glass reflection. It is going behind the cab when I want to take another attempt at it.

Some pre 2014 pics:

I bought this truck in Dec 2009. I always thought it didn't have enough power and I love turbos. At least the 2rz has a great aftermarket. Plenty of reading later turns out lots of people put a turbo on their 2rz and make good reliable power. Aug 2014 bought a $150 ebay turbo a decided to try this out on a prerunner. Goal was only 4-5 psi which is about 50hp over stock. 3 weeks of making a mild steel header, downpipe, intercooler, oil plumbing, wideband o2 sensor, boost gauge and slightly larger injectors I was turbo charged. I left out a good chunk of what I did, but there is a ton of info on custom tacos. I just wanted to do something different than a v6 or v8 swap. Plus I still have AC. You don't see very many turbo prerunners.

What do you know 4-5 psi is boring, lol. Lets make 8-9psi which is roughly 100hp over stock. Added a mapecu3 piggyback with a urd jumper cable. All plug and play. Mean I can be stock by simply unplugging everything. Slowly learned to tune this myself. I came from tuning my turbo charged mazdaspeed3 so this wasn't that hard for me to learn. Also made an air straightener in front of my maf sensor to help with the higher air flow.

2015 I picked up a 2004 tundra rear end to widen the rear. Stripped off the old spring perches and welded some new ones one. I did the rear long travel back in 2011 with the allpro 62" 50t leaf pack.
I chopped the bed off because it was annoying. The tires where busting through the wheel wells and all the sheet metal was falling apart. The shocks went outside the frame so I can make a 3x4 storage bin. My track width increased by 4" per side. This helped out my high speed stability a lot.

I hate white fiberglass so picked up an hvlp paint gun from harbor freight and duplicolor paint. It's a bit soft and orange peel is crazy. Recommend a good urethane paint if you plan to do this. I made the spray booth inside an ez-up with plastics around the side. Nice respirator is needed for this. Not the best job, but I knocked it out in a day.

Had a bunch of fun with the rear suspension after a few shock re-valves. Truck was getting pretty fast and scary. It was time for a full kill cab cage. So I picked up 180ft of 1.75 x .120 DOM tube. Also mounted a floor jack to the bedcage.

This is the part of the build everyone is waiting for CAB CAGE! So I ripped everything out of the cab to get things started. I wanted the cage to hug the cab as close as possible. I was curious to see if I could find away all AC vents still worked. Pulled the airbags and all the sensors that go with that system. The A pillar was the most difficult section for me to get started. Also the fuse box at the dash needed a new home.

Took me a few weeks to do an A pillar section that I liked. Plus this was the first time using a tube bender. Built a JDsquared bender with the swag offroad ram jack attachment. Love this bender.
This is just a play truck, but a few sections of the tubing has some 1.5" inserts with rosette welds. If you are building a race truck you will be avoiding these. This is my first cage. I'm happy that I didn't need to burn the truck down.

Back tubes to the rear bedcage, finsh up the b-pillar section, Vbars! got to make it look race truck if you do a cage and chop up my core support.

This section came with some compromises. If you look at race truck, all tubes meet at one node. I was able to get pretty close to doing that but their was about a few creature comforts that I still wanted to have on this truck. Going through the firewall isn't that easy.

This reminds me that I REALLY need to do a cage before I do LT. I already drive faster than I should, and doing LT will just make it way too easy to go much faster. What I really need is more time to actually do a cage.
