working on my rear axle setup up and trying to eliminate the shock issue back there. Probably gunna end up running LC coils or possibly stick with my OME 891 to keep lift up despite my weight back there. Looking to move my shocks outside the frame... rad Flo 10" or 12"? I think 12s will need straps. I'm also toying with running a 3 link or 4 link rear setup instead of the stock setup. worth the effort? What are your thoughts? Trials and tribulations with modifying your own setup?

Really depends on what you want out of your vehicle.
12’s are doable, but you may be limited on up travel with most 12” shocks, which is pretty lame. I did outboard shocks on mine back in the day with 12” short body bilsteins. I was able to barely squeeze them in with stock up travel. Bilstein 7100 short body shocks are quite a bit shorter than most other brands.

Regarding 3 or 4 link. I’d say it’s absolutely worth it if you have the ability to do it and do it right. With good geometry, the truck will handle so much better.

@AssBurns Did you shock hoop it for the back? Just make a cute box that extends up off the frame? Or did you change the shock setup back there from the outboard to inboard? If so what did you end up doing? Did it correct the travel issues? All the questions... not looking to go through the do and redo and redo and redo and redo if I don't have too.

Here’s some pics.
I made a cute little boxed tower. Reason I went this route was to retain maximum up travel without having to run massive offset wheels with spacers (these pics are with stock wheels and 1.25” spacers). You can see how close the tire already is to the shock mount with things being frenched into the frame. The short body Bilsteins really helped with packaging, plus they are actually pretty affordable and work well.
I eventually went with hydro bumps when I did the 4-link a couple years later. I can find pics of that too if you want.

@AssBurns just started going down the rabbit hole of your build...I will redirect questions to a private message as this thread will likely just turn in to me asking you for help and advice...
Doesn't hurt to ask the questions out loud, it helps others as well, and they may have the same questions.
This! ^^^
Thats the benefit of a forum so others can learn.

Feel free to post questions in my build thread or if there is not already a thread started on a topic, go ahead and start a new thread like you did here.

Im heading down to hammer town this week... Will resume my journey to alter suspension when I get back. Sound's like I'll continue this journey through this thread since it may benefit others. A crazier idea would be to run a 4link with coilover setup running axle to the crossmember... maybe if I get drunk enough in the desert I can start sketching up what that would look like on a third gen. I'm just spit balling now...

Shame there's something more important going on this weekend or else some of us would probably come meet you. Enjoy JV. It's a fun place, especially while KOH is happening.

Whats more important than going hard in the desert!? We're test running courses after "final" preps for KOH season. We plan to run half the courses forward and backwards this weekend. Will make another trip closer to holidays to run the other half in same way. So when KOH announces Cours and direction we are prepared and will have fixed any flaws in the vehicle.

:noidea:
I got the vaccine last December when the left was against it.

Now they haven’t mandated the third shot on us. I’ve held off because I had Covid and then the 2x vaccine. The latest info is that doing it that way results in ridiculous amounts of antibodies.
I’m probably one of the safest people to be around as far as Covid transmission

I'm the least safest person to be around with a R150F transmission...does that count?

Check out @socal4rnr on IG. I helped him do 4-link and outboard 14” coilovers on his 3rd Gen. It performed really well. I was very impressed, but he wanted to go a step further so now we are in the process of doing trailing arms… quite the rabbit whole lol
