Headed out to the desert on New Years to plink. What is worth a damn as far as close range reusable targets for 5.56? Any self healing targets that can withstand those rounds? I’m usung iron sights for now, and maybe a close range optic down the road. I’m not really interested in AR500 plates at a distance sage enough to use them at this point, so I’ll probaby stick with some paper targets unless someone has a strong recommendation.

At less than 100 yards you’re best off with paper targets. Maybe even stand some clay pigeons upright against some wood. Rifle rounds will tear shit up

Piece of plywood with some circles painted on it.

I don’t need a $300 steel gong with frame but I figured there has to be something reusable that’s worth buying. I’m ok with paper targets and wood frame if that’s my only safe close range object.

What do you consider close range?

Also what about paper plates + staple gun + long wood stakes?

<50 yds

I have the splatter targets already but have used the orange self healing targets with pistols and they're fun to shoot so I was hoping there was a rifle version of that or something unconventional poeple were accustomed to using. Clay pigons will be brought for the shotguns so I could always use those on a post or something.

If you're going to be in orange county before you go out I've got a stack of paper targets courtesy of my last job.

Is it just me or is putting a pistol brace on something rifle length a thing?

Personally I don’t bother shooting at targets closer than 100 yards with rifle rounds.

I do like setting up AR500 @ 100 yards for 22s.

Oh just thought about something. I know some people who’d take old bowling pins for targets. They’re relatively cheap and will have decent durability

I used them with pistols once but forgot about them being an option. Might be fun to knock down a row of them.

It’s looks like a pistol length barrel with a can. I built a 12.5 w can it’s 17 or I can take the can off and still won’t get my dog shot by the atf.

well as I said before for me it’s to get around the CA AW law as it’s not considered a rifle unless it has a stock and it’s not a pistol because of barrel length.

Even then I could only build it that way because I had lowers from 2013 that I had never built and were DROS before CADOJ started making dealers classify and categorize long guns.

any other reason to do it seems stupid. I’d rather have a stock.

also my reason has since been classified as an AW and has to be registered before the end of the year.

its not a can. It’s the knock off of the Noveske KX5. Forget who makes it but I think midway sells them. I was going to go that route originally but since my upper and barrel are both Noveske I got the KX5 just cuz.

*edit* pretty sure it’s the KAK Flash Can

Want to trade it for a stock?
