  • Unusually high idle at startup, fine later... a little high is norm, but this ain't that...
  • Rough idle that doesn't quite feel like anything serious... but is definitely there...
  • Pickup/accel okay, but nothing to book a track weekend to show off...
  • Big altitude changes sometimes make you think you have a gas leak... and others think you do too...
  • Toyota tells you your vapor canister is bad... but can't explain any legitimate reason for this other than, just because... or why problems persist after it is replaced...
  • Sometimes it sounds like a frog made a home in near your gas filler tube...
  • Fuel economy, well it was never stellar.

Replace your f'n fuel cap. In retrospect, and especially when you list them all in one place, it makes perfect and quite obvious sense — the vehicle was struggling to build/maintain control of appropriate pressure in the lines. Like anyone on here I am a pretty savvy guy when it comes to the mechanics. I can even design and cut some good fab — just don't ask me to weld anything you have to look at. So, I had bought a new fuel cap gasket years ago to address some of these issues, but it turns out the whole thing needs to be replaced to have the intended impact. There are about 10 other things over the years that I've read as "common problems" that I would now align to this stupid little part being faulty. So, anything close to these consider just buying a new fuel filler cap. I mean, we spend enough money on these toys to overlook this feels, stupid.

PN 77300-53010 (bought mine at McGeorge Toyota, https://toyotaparts.mcgeorgetoyota.com/oem-parts/toyota-fuel-tank-cap-7730053010)

Just thought I'd share. I have a 3G @ 169k, so YMMV.

Yeah, I replaced that a number of times over the years and found it did help a lot - so it works.

But this last time I just decided to do the whole cap - marked difference from prior gasket replacements. So, maybe 3:1 - replace the seal 3 times and the 4th replace the cap. For those interested the OEM code for that gasket on a 3G is (77316-16010)
