We were discussing why the 5th Gens got grouped with Turd Gens. But we also know the typicals. Plus this is the grocery getter of our fleet.

Steven set up the forum names, I just implemented it. You know, the whole Overlanding thing and what not. You're right though, 5th gens should have their own section because there's enough differences in suspension and motor than the 4th gens and they aren't even close to being like a 3rd gen Tacoma.

5th Gen 4Runners (aka Overlanding Minivans)
3rd Gen Tacomas (aka Turds)

I do love me a 5th gen, but I also love my 3rd gen :gossip:

I almost bought a 5th gen, then I would have had to sell my Tacoma to make up the difference. Found my 4th gen a week later for a better price and got to keep the Tacoma. To be honest, if I had picked up the 5th gen I doubt I would have wheeled it as hard as I do with my 4th gen.

I do love me a 4th gen too, don't think you can go wrong with any runner tbh.

Personal preference is for the odd gens (1,3,5)

1st gets you either factory or easy solid front axle, removable top and gear driven t-cases

3rd gets you a very solid platform for covering a lot of bases.

5th is very nice and refined.

2nd has so many 3.slows with the awkward t-cases and such
4th isn’t bad, just personally somewhat awkward looking and kind of neutered on the Offroad options. But can get the V8.

Neutered on the off road options? Besides the rear bumper there's a ton of aftermarket support for the 4th gens. I do agree they're awkward looking in stock form, but front/rear bumpers took care of that.

How many are available with the lockers?

Referring to the factory.

Verified some more...
IMO, Toyota took a step back with only the Trail Ed having the rear locker, introducing X-Reas and having the center diff. Better for the market, less so for harder off-roading.

Gotcha. 1, and it's a fucking unicorn. hahah. I was getting ready to drive to Arizona for an 09 Trail, but it was sold the same day it hit the lot. There's the FJ 3rd member mod, but it comes out close to the same cost as just getting an ARB/Harrop installed. As much hate as ATRAC gets, if you aren't rock crawling it works great on the 4runner platform for just about every type of terrain. Really amazed me how much it got me through. Once I started getting into rocks it got really clear really fast how limited the system actually is.

Aren’t the front suspension, drivetrain, and front clip, all interchangeable between the 5th gen 4Runners and 3rd gen Tacoma’s?

I would guess as much as 5th to 2nd would be since everybody claims it’s the same cab and suspension with a different ride height.

Honestly, I've never looked that close at either one of them.
