Yup, Ok.
I guess that's kinda what I was thinking about

Mind you this is a 4.88 set, if there wasn't so much shit in the way I'd pull my spare third with stock gears out and show the difference.

It was a good day. Many of the roads were plowed because they’re actively logging the forest. But there were several roads to go get in trouble on. The biggest trouble is making sure you aren’t on an active snowmobile trail. They’re not really marked, you just have to know. And depending on which maps you’re using, you may get a different answer. Don’t really want to piss off the locals since we’re using their trails and would like to make sure they don’t get closed. Yeah “local” is USFS, but still.

Surprisingly, the places some of us actually got stuck were the parking lot where we met, and the side of the road at the end of our travels while waiting for a group of snowmobiles to pass. The rest of the day has close calls, but made it through without damage. The deepest snow was probably two feet deep down one untraveled trail. Managed to stay on top, but it was an interesting feeling slopping around the surface trying to stay out of the trees. While following the ruts of a couple of folks ahead of me, I thought about getting out of the ruts (about 10” deep) and cut my own snow. I did just that, and was nearly dragged into a big ass tree. Well, back in the ruts with me then. And, of course, found myself in a ditch at the end as I showed earlier.

But sure was a good time. Have to try it again when I have larger tires. One guy has 33x10.5 on his Tacoma. I’ve pondered that option over the 285s. Is the idea to float or cut through to solid ground beneath? Probably plenty of opinions on that.

I hate that I have to travel nearly three hours to get to an off road destination, but it’s how things go on this side of the country.

What kind of tires are you running right now? I say get as large of a tire you can fit for the kind of lift you have. I noticed a big difference going from my 285/75/16 to my 35x10.5 Kendas.

We have to drive a bit to hit any decent desert so I understand the struggle

Right now, stock sized KO2s (265/70-17). Popular sizes without massive mods are 285/70-17 and 255/80-17, both 33-ish. Either will likely need BMC and/or inner fender mods depending on wheel offset. I like my trail wheels, so keeping that offset reduces the extremity of most major mods in the above tire sizes.

Hadn’t considered a 10.5 wide tire until now. That gray Tacoma pictured has 33x10.5 Kendas and spent last summer all over Moab. So certainly a legit contender.

I liked running 255s on the runner before I went to 315s and I've got skinnies on my Tacoma right now. If you're only going to do mild trails and snow runs, my duratracs were awesome for that kind of stuff, especially snow and mud. The drawback is the weak sidewalls and I killed a few on rocks.

These the Kendas you’re using (size not withstanding)?
