Running 39s, I'd be more worried about pinion gear surface area under shock load, than transmission load, but I'm probably just paranoid.

Not TOO worried about that stuff. Not planning on running 500+hp out of it. I would love an underdrive but no affordable options. I wish they made a 1.35:1 ratio for the NP203. Might have to just save for an atlas 4 speed with a 1.5:1 so I can run 4.11 gears

If you do an Atlas, get the 3.8 gears. My gearing with a 4.7 crawler feels bang on where I want it, but I have stock 4.10s in the diffs. I'm 90% sure I'm not going to bother with regear until I SAS, but even with 4.88/5.29 I feel like it'd be too slow for me. Even with an LS swap the 3.8:1 would go very well with a 4L80e (2.54 first gear). Just my 2¢.

Agreed on the crawling ratios. I think anything close to 4.0:1 would be ideal with a big motor. What I’m mostly concerned about is keeping my trans happy in the desert. With diff ratios in the 4’s, I would have a really hard time getting into 3rd gear with big tires. I think I’m going to have to either go with something in the 5’s for a happy medium. Even something in the high 5’s/low 6’s would be nice for gearing but not so hot for strength. I don’t plan to spend much time over 80mph.
Looks like you have no choice but portals :noidea::popcorn2:
You fund it and I’ll run it.

Showed this to a buddy. He has a pretty worked up old Nissan.

He was mostly disparaging, and said it'd be a waste of time for some one off thing, shoulda used a 14 bolt, yada yada whatever.

I laughed. Why are people like that? Why do they shit on cool stuff?

Just makes no sense to me.

In other circles we would call someone like that a grognard. It’s slang for a old wargamer that plays an old/defunct version of a game and complains about how much better things were before they “ruined” it. Look at pirate4x4 and you’ll see plenty of the type of people I’m talking about.

Without innovation, hobbies become stagnant and eventually die off. Off-roading will suffer the same issues if people aren’t willing to come up with new ideas and put them into production.

This is my sincere hope for overlanding. I mean how much more can you possibly "innovate" car camping?
Overlanding is dirt tourism. It’s dipping your toe into the ocean to see what surfers are all about.

Hopefully they’ll decide to become outdoorsmen, conservationists, off-roaders, etc. In the meantime they’re there to glamp and annoy the fuck out of anyone who knows better.

But it is a way to get new blood into the hobbies we enjoy. It also does advance the industry into meeting certain needs. There’s a lot of stupid overlander tricks/gear that can be beneficial if utilized properly. The Plano cases on the roof rack thing is being adopted by more off-roaders. The waterport/rinse kit solution of pressurized water is quite handy. Yes there’s some ridiculous stuff like skottles but the more experienced people will know when to roll their eyes at them.

Unless you have a trans cooler already, Derale makes a bunch of coolers that would definitely get the job done. I'll probably be adding one soon since my trans temps were in the low 200s when I was double low last trip.

Well temps aren't the only concern. It's just kinda shitty to be constantly shifting between 1st and 2nd, when there are 4 speeds. Since an underdrive is out of the question, I am forced to run weaker gears or deal with suboptimal final drive ratios. I'm sure I'll be more than happy with more power than I have now, but it just kinda sucks to have it stuck between two gears 80% of the time I'm getting on it. I don't think I'll have the suspension to be able to use 3rd gear often, and 4th gear's overdrive is pretty much just a highway ratio anyways. Maybe I'm just overthinking it. Just based on what I know about the prerunner/desert racing scene, is that they seem to have a gear ratio issue with the stock trans ratios. Hard to hold high RPM's when the shift points are a big gap and the tall gear ratios are rarely used in the desert.

So the guy that initially had this diff in his race car reached out to me and let me know he had a bunch of sealing issues, and gave some suggestions on how to resolve them. After some discussion we figured the Spidertrax seals would probably be the best option. Ordered up a set of these guys to weld into the housing to seal it up better. Hope it works.

send it out for milling. have them build up that opening to make it perfect. that will pay for itself if you have to replace the seals again if it doesn't work after it's had a few miles on it.

I don't think there is enough material in there to mill it out to fit these seals. Once I get the seals and can put it all together, I'll see what my options are. Either way those seals seem to be the way to go.

yea if they had to build it up before milling then it would get pretty expensive
