Hey ya'll I just came across this thread while troubleshooting a P0172 on my 93 Pickup that has a 2003 2rzfe swap. Back in 2012 when I did the swap I ran the charcoal can straight to the intake manifold vacuum. What happened is that when the gas cap was tight and pressure in the tank built up, the engine would suck a larger quantity of vapor up to the engine. This would make it bog down some and eventually throw a P0172

Moral of the story. Don't run the tank vapor straight to the intake vacuum all the time or the ECM could detect an overrich fuel trim issue and pop the P0172 which in turn causes the ECM to pull fuel and it will run like crap.

Just throwing this out there to help ya'll out since this thread helped me out!

Sounds like you should just vent to the atmosphere like I ended up doing. Do the FATS system in case if a roll over. Keeps it simple and easy.

I'm thinking I need to do this. My charcoal can is dead. They don't even sell new ones anymore, so I pretty much have to find a good used one.

With this FATS setup does the Fram filter get rid of some of those harsh vapors?

I actually found some more info on it here. https://www.pirate4x4.com/threads/fats-fuel-air-trap-system.243815/

Yeah the filter will help keep a little bit of fumes from escaping as freely. I had a filter on mine but somehow I broke it off and never ended up replacing it. When I redo things, I'll add the filter back in.

Did this eliminate the p0446 code after deleting? Having that code every couple hundred miles and wanna delete.

No idea TBH. I don't remember ever having that code before deleting the EVAP system.

I've had my EVAP/ Charcoal Canister bypassed for some time now and just barely bulled the Charcoal Canister out so I thought I'd share how I did it. The way I bypassed it is much easier and simpler than the ways I’ve seen some guys doing it before. No tee fittings, no breather tube and still vents to your intake rather than directly to the atmosphere. Gotta keep the hippies happy

Honestly, it's just a better idea in my opinion so that fuel vapors are not just dumping out into your engine bay or outside of your vehicle. You will smell unburnt fuel sometimes out your exhaust but better than fresh gas fumes all the time.

There are only a few lines that need to be changed with this method. Basically all you need to do is locate your Fuel Tank Vent Line and unplug it from the Charcoal Canister. Locate your Vapor Purge Valve and unplug the lower hose that connects to the Charcoal Canister. Now plug the Fuel Tank Vent Line directly to the Vapor Purge Valve. Then locate the hose that runs from your Air Box to your Charcoal Canister. Pull the hose and cap the tube coming out of the Air Box. That's it! Now just unplug the pressure sensor and unbolt the Charcoal Canister to pull it all out. Easy peasy! This can easily be done without any modifications in just a few minutes, so everything can easily be put back into place when you need to pass SMOG or Inspection.

Hope this helps anyone that is looking to gain some room in the engine bay.

I did this on my 99 4runner (in a 94 pickup now) and I'm getting a p0450 code. What did I do wrong? Right Line goes to intake and left is the Tank Vent

Not sure. I don't remember ever getting that code. Eventually I ended up just ditching the whole setup and vented the tank to the atmosphere instead of the intake.

Ok. Started it and it'd idle around 850-900rpm for a bit then rise to 1,400-2k and randomly jump to 3k stay then climb back down. Drove fine no hesitation just a real high idle with a p0171 code (system too lean) maf is clean and new. Any input on it before I spend 250 or so on a new evap canister?

Could clog up the air intake port and intake manifold port. Just vent your tank to the atmosphere as a test.

Your intake manifold might be sucking in too much air making you run lean.

I did that and it no longer backfired through the intake BUT when I start it it'll immediately idle up to around 2k. Next step I guess is get a evap canister and see what happens

Sounds like you have other issues instead of evap since you did an isolated test.
Check your air idle control valve and other things that let air in your motor.
