Yeah a little more heat would help on those spindles, but another thing to do in the future when welding on something that heavy and also forged is to pre-heat the spindle so you can get better penetration. The thick spindle material will dissipate a ton of heat quickly while the gusset is thin and will get decent penetration. When pre-heating the spindle it makes it easier for the weld to penetrate into the thick forged material faster as you are welding.

I have preheated sets with a torch but I can't remember if it was on these.

Thanks for the input! I definitely think some more heat or upping the voltage on the welder would be beneficial.

So I can't seem to just buy stuff and leave it alone before I bolt it on to my truck. LOL . My wife bought me a bumper for my birthday last year even though I told her I was going to cut it up and change it. I have a great wife!

So this is how my addicted off road hybrid bumper looked the day it showed up.

I'm not a big fan of hoops so it had to go and since was structural I needed to do some mods. I started by cutting off the light bar and began to fit my Ramsey winch into the limited space. I left the hoop in place till I got some structure built back in.

then added a nice plat of 3/8 along the back for support.

then needed to fill in the front and make things strong in the front.

Then got it welded up front and back.

Then the hoop had to go. It was almost sad to cut off the beautiful welds that were from Addicted but I knew it would look so much better. Got it fitted up to the Runner and drilled the holes for the turn signal LED's.

Then lots and lots of grinding until it was ready for paint.

A couple of days later it was painted and on the truck.

Got the winch installed. took it wheeling and pulled a buddy with his jeep off a Rock. So happy with how it turned out.

Wow that turned out really well! I like it a lot with your take on it.
I’m not a big fan of hoops either. Just makes things too bulky I feel like and gets in the way of adding lights.

The demello single hoop is about perfect. Gives me just enough over the hood so I can see where the edge of my front is. If I wanted a light bar there's more than enough space under it to mount one.

yea I hate having to lean over a hoop to work on the front of an engine. Came out good. BigFishallday was the inspiration, he closed in the front of his first but left the hoop.

Looks really good and clean. Nice work.

I'm not a huge fan of hoops even though I added some to my bumper. Didn't like the ones that Outdoor Logic offered so I built my own. There's a good bit wildlife up here and i wanted a little protection against a deer coming through my radiator. A deer would still destroy the bumper and probably break/bend my hoops off, but I'd bet on my radiator staying safe enough to keep driving. Gave a nice spot to mount loops and wrap the winch line when it get used every 10 mins

@Rapier46 holy shit! That tacoma is fucking rad! I still wish I had a double cab 1st gen tacoma over a 4runner, but I was only able to afford the 4runner at the time, and more back seat space for the kids. I love the bobbed bed, and back-half chop. Bummed to see you are going to the dark side of SAS though haha

Just do what we've all been talking about and do a 1 ton IFS swap instead. :boink:

Thanks man. Haha you’ve brainwashed my buddy (who showed me this site) into wanting that type of setup. Could be super super cool.

seriously I don’t even know if I can execute a proper basic 3 link. Let alone all the ins and outs of a fancy ifs setup. Heavy duty ifs is so sick though. My ifs is actually treating me really well so far. I’m locked front and rear with dual cases and I thrash this thing pretty hard.

There’s nothing about this ifs/irs buggy that isn’t awesome

He's fine, we have a solid axle section exactly for stuff like this.

@Rapier46 awesome build man. Can't wait to see what's next. I really need to get myself a welder.

Hahah who’s your buddy? I’ve talked to quite a few people about wanting to do this. Glad he convinced you to come here and check it out.

My plan at this point isn’t to do anything different with the front suspension (besides bolt on long travel). I just want to modify the 9.25” AAM IFS diff to replace the stock 7.5”. Shouldn’t be too hard fabrication wise. It would just be expensive after buying gears and lockers for the new front diff, new driveshaft, custom CV’s, cutting and broaching the stub shaft, etc.

I figured it would probably take about $5k once all said and done with stock spindles. I’d like to upgrade the spindles to 1 ton spindles too but that may have to wait.
