So if your serious about going down this route you are going to need a good holster.
From all my research IWB appendix carry seems to provide the fasts draw, most comfortable, and best concealment.

Tier1 Concealed has a nice kydex holster that bends in the center between the holster and the sidecar mag holder
https://www.tier1concealed.com/collections/iwb-holsters.

Get a holster to match the gun you want to carry.
Having a tac light on the gun is a good idea. You never know if your going to be attacked in broad daylight or at night.
Having a bright light to both identify and blind targets is invaluable.

Practice drawing from the holster. Appendix carry is more dangerous then most and if you don't practice you may end up with and extra hole.
Re holstering is probably the most dangerous given clothing can get caught in the holster as you insert your firearm.

For the love of ALL THINGS don't carry with an empty chamber.
Under-stress you won't have time or opportunity to chamber a round.

thank you for the information.

looking at pieces now. hoping to get some range time soon to see what is comfortable to me before buying.

it's going to take a lot of figuring out. simultaneously happening will be physical training and personal defence to keep the gun holstered and prevent leathal use. only as the last resort. I was out of breath from just the adrenaline and shouting at this person and the best way to avoid getting shot is distance and I would have been sunk. I'm looking at Marshall training and krav maga classes.

The whole point to CC is to be able to react and you are absolutely right about a chambered round. hard to fire a round when it's not in a chamber.

edit: freaking autocorrect, Marshal not the clothing store.

I'm looking at 9, 357 and 45acp. not a wheelgun fan. sig, glock, Kimber. always liked 5Seven but California.

that's a really nice setup.
If you’re going to carry condition 1 then I would suggest a thumb safety. Because of California problems the easiest choice would be S&W m&p shield.

As for the 5.7 (California problems again), you have two options on the list and they’re both 4.75” barrels. Not the most CCW friendly piece. From personal experience it’s a tougher pistol to get used to. Ymmv

have access to a m&p and have held it, wasn't great. I have smaller hands and didn't feel right. I prefer a stacked thumb grip.

A m&p shield is as small as they get and still be reliable/accurate. Get a $10 grip wrap from eBay it will thicken up the grip a bit.

ok, asked my friend and it was a m&p but had a different grip. so he's gonna swap it to stock and I'll try it again.
I’m all for finding something that feels great in your hands etc but because of Commiefornia problems and the purpose of a CCW in this case (concealed self defense) I think you’re going to have to make a compromise.

Seems grips, sights, and lights are okay to modify on a CCW. Anything else might be used against you in court due to slimy lawyers. Some food for thought:

I do suggest lurking the fuck out of calguns. Tons of good info there. Also they’re not a bunch of DBs, just use the search best you can.

I wanted to put in an extended mag release and maybe an aftermarket trigger on a shield but....

I am not physically strong and never have been (life of being a computer nerd / nerd in general).
I am afraid of getting my ass kicked in any physical altercation.

Because of that I am going to go to pistol first. I am not even going to try to physically fight back.

Also the closer your attacker is to you the higher the chance they are able to get control of your weapon and then you are fucked.

If someone advances in a threatening manner I am going to draw down on them (in theory since I don't have a CCW).
The act of drawing the gun is their first warning.

Further aggressive actions and movement toward me or another individual = rounds flying.

Thumb safety is just another thing you need to switch before going pew pew.
I'd rather carry a striker pistol like a Glock then one with a thumb safety.

Whats the california problem with CCW and lack of thumb safety?

I thought it was when close quarters, retreat (if possible) first with warnings and if still keep coming, then lethal force. Computer nerd too.

The California problem I’m referring to is the lack of options. Not many choices if you want a decent CCW piece and even less have the option for a thumb safety. Just for reference the shield does have a version on the roster that has a thumb safety.

I know it’s all muscle memory and that proper training/practice is going to be required regardless of what he chooses to get

Just cause it has it doesn't mean you have to have it on. I never use the one on my shield that has it.
