Lame. Hope you didn't do any damage yesterday. Was gonna stop by on the way home and grab my water jug, but you didn't pick up and I said fuckit. I'll come get it in a couple weeks when you're free.
I told you it’ll be on the porch... you probably don’t remember that conversation though lol
Start with replacing the radiator cap.
I’ll pick up a new cap tomorrow and see

Still chasing some overheating issues from last weekend.

I started by flushing the system, replacing the thermostat, and replacing the heater control valve. None of those did the trick...
I tried a new radiator cap and got one of those fancy fill funnels to help burp the system and still no improvements.
Last night I back flushed the system and threw the thermostat in some boiling water to verify it is working. There seemed to be some slight improvements, but it could've been the fact it was 38° and raining outside. Still had the issue of temps getting up to 220° when driving.

Last night I installed a new radiator. It's the one from a 2.4L Tacoma. Sits flush with the frame rails. I forgot which hose to grab while I was at the parts store so I couldn't test it out to see if this is the issue. I'll be picking up a new hose this morning and hopefully I can find time throughout the day to head home and test it out. If this isn't the issue, I am thinking it might be the catalytic converter being clogged and too much back pressure causing it to overheat. Really not too sure. It could possibly be the water pump, but typically if the water pump is bad, the heater would be blowing cold air. Mine is blowing hot air just fine.

220° is considered within normal temp.
Are y’all running cooler?

My 1st gen Tacoma used to run at 225 :noidea:

how bad was the fluid when you flushed it? the core, thermostat and pump might be working but if it's all plugged up with crud and no flow, you'll run hot.

Should ideally be under 200° if I remember correctly. I think the thermostat is set for something around 180°.
I'd be doing the same as you if I was running at 220, a little too hot for my liking.
For normal driving, I'd stay around 163-186 IIRC, it's been a while since I've driven the thing though.

It was rusty and gross. Definitely needed to be flushed (which I did multiple times over the last few days). It seemed to be flowing better and ran a little cooler when I back flushed the system for like 20 minutes last night.

Yeah 220° is definitely too hot. Should be under 200° under normal driving conditions. I can see it going up if it was hot outside and under high load, but not on city and highway driving when its almost freezing out.

Is the thermostat jiggle valve at a 6 o’clock position? That’s one of the keys to not running a few degrees hot. Lots of documentation on T4R.org about it.

i have the short OSC 1986 Tacoma 2.4 radiator and the gates cap for it sucks balls and doesn’t seal well. I son’t have any overheating problems, but I’ve looked at the radiator stem and seen it leaks a little bit. Might be something like that contributing to it of the system isn’t sealed. I’m going to order a Toyota cap from the dealership soon to alleviate that. Just food for thought.

Good news!
Got the radiator swapped to the 2.4L Tacoma radiator last night. I picked up the hose this morning (PN# Gates 22120). Took a long lunch and went home to get it swapped over. Easy stuff. Bled all the air out of the system using that fancy coolant funnel. Took it for a spin up the road and had no issues at all. Last night I couldn't even drive up a mile up the steep road by my house without it hitting 220° and having to turn around. Today I drove the whole 5 or so miles up the road and the highest the temps got was 196°. I'm calling that a win!

Still might want to think about swapping the water pump if that shit was super gunky. You said like 300k miles right? Probably due anyway.

Motor has 175k according to the seller. I'll probably do the timing belt and water pump in the future. At least at this point it will get me out wheeling this weekend.

I would have gone with the 2.7L rad over the 2.4L. It's the same height, but a little thicker but has more cores.

Pretty sure they are a couple inches different in height. I think I remember searching that when I did it on the BeerRunner.

The 2.4 is the shortest but if there’s one just as short with a thicker core for the 2.7 I’m not aware of it. I’m sure you can find a beefy aluminum racing radiator with the proper inlet/ outlet locations of you have the budget for it. The one I’m using is not very thick but it’s similar to the one I took off my 3.4 and I believe it’s only around an inch thick at the core. OSC 1986

I got the one for the 2.4L. It’s the 18” high one. The other one is like 20.5” height.

Taking suggestions for rear shocks.
The 5100’s couldn’t keep up. Shocks got so hot they melted the seals and boots, and exploded hot shock oil everywhere. The shock was literally smoking hot.

Only requirement is I need to maintain stock up travel. I don’t want to extend the bumps to make the shock work. That’ll just make things ride like shit with no up travel.

any suggestions?

Also lost a Panhard bolt. Use loctite guys!

Whatever shock you can get your hands on at this point. Isn’t everything on backorder?
