It has the same shift pattern as a manual J shift, but only the Hi/Low is mechanical. The 2wd/4wd/AWD is electronically controlled. The shifter moves a rod which is connected to a sensor, which tells the actuator to move another rod which controls the shift forks.
It’s dumb.

sounds dumb

Got my HAM Radio installed which was pretty straightforward and easy... well besides the cracked dash bezel. Fuck me, right?! That upper clip was stuck and no matter what I was doing it wouldn’t pop. This thing is super brittle so it cracked super easy when I twisted it the wrong way.

Also got the Baja Designs Squadron Pro’s installed. I’ll go cruise around for a quick night run tonight after dinner to check them out. Stock headlights suck balls so I decided to install them now and move them once I get ditch light brackets.

Sucks about the bezel! Not sure which ditch light brackets you're after, but I think I have some SRQ/True North fab ones laying around. If you wanna cover shipping, they're yours.

Didn’t get much for pics during the process but I got some things installed this weekend. Finally making some progress.
  • Eimkeith LCAR
  • Durobumps front and rear (3.25” for the rear)
  • Whiteline LCA bushings
  • 333 Fab Alignment Cam Eliminators
  • Honda windshield washer nozzle upgrade (not as good as I expected)
  • Sony XAV-AX1000 head unit. (Literally the only reason I picked this one is because it had apple car play and a volume knob)
Some of the next things on the list are limit straps, coilovers (from the BeerRunner), rear coils, make some rock sliders, and figure out why 4wd isn’t working.

also my finger after my dumbass cut myself cutting a ziptie. I knew it was gonna happen and thought I was better than that (extra retarded). I superglued the flap of skin back on. It only worked for a few hours until it eventually cracked the glue and fell off. Coulda been way worse.

Tis but a flesh wound. Cut myself on a bracket yesterday when my wrench slipped and I slammed my hand into it. Was a good solid weekend of wrenching for me too.

Are limiting straps a pain in the ass to set up? I know it's all relative (I don't know squat about swapping transfer cases or anything like you and I certainly can't weld), but I'm looking into them since my ADS coilovers should hopefully be here soon. From what I've read, not only do they prevent the possibility of straining the coilover, but also diminish a lot of stress on the coil buckets. Remind me, does the Beer Runner have straps?

I recommend straps for both the reasons you stated above.
If you have access to a welder then limit straps are easy. Get the Eimkeith LCAR, it comes with the limit strap tab that integrates the lower shock bolt. I also recommend getting the adjustable clevis so it’s easy to dial in the strap as things wear and stretch over time.

Looking good. Bro I almost lost two fingers and a deep cut to the shoulder. I was cutting stone at chest level. The blade got stuck and ripped the grinder out of my hand. Did a 180 fought my pinky and ring finger in the left hand and continued to climb up to my shoulder. I grabbed my hand was expecting the worst. It cut through the glove and only nicked my two fingers and shoulder. I had a death grip on the grinder rest of the day.

I forgot to ask on IG, but did you preheat anything on the LCA before welding on the LCAR?

Nope, no preheating necessary in my opinion. I think it could be a slight benefit, but I really don't think it's needed. Maybe a little on the actual part the LBJ bolts to, but I don't think it's necessary. I'm no expert though.

Gotcha. I don't know if that part of the LBJ that the armor gets welded to is forged or casted, but if it's casted, I'd want to know. I know for my spindle gussets I can weld straight to them since they're forged. If @eimkeith wants to chime in, I'd greatly appreciate it.

They are most definitely forged

I guess I'll channel my inner Larry Enticer and I'm...

Had quite the day yesterday. Started out good but ended kinda lame.

Got up early and started working on getting the lift in. Started with @eimkeith strut tower reinforcements. Got the coilovers installed, made some mounts for the limit strap clevis’s. Moved onto the rear and got the @eimkeith PCK installed, and the JL coils installed. Man, it drives so much better with better suspension and the PCK. Like a whole new vehicle.

@4runner DOA & @Airdog met me at my place and we headed out to Indio to top off gas and head up to Joshua Tree. Well we were like 2 miles into the dirt when the heater control valve broke on me. Lost a ton of coolant but was able to bypass it. Tried to burp it while we were out but didn’t have much luck. We tried a few times but didn’t have luck. Used up most of Danny’s spare water jug messing with it.
Ended up driving home and the temps stayed pretty mellow for the most part.

Today I replaced the heater control valve, the thermostat and flushed the system (without the thermostat in place). I had the front and rear heaters on max both during the flush and when I was filling up. Went for a test drive and within a few miles of going uphill it started overheating again. Let it cool down, and drove back home. Doesn’t have any issues going downhill.

I picked up a combustion leak test kit. Seemed to do fine. Fluid didn’t change colors at all. Coolant system seems to hold pressure well (haven’t actually pressure tested it yet).

Gotta figure it out ASAP since I’m supposed to be in Havasu this weekend to do some wheeling.

Lame. Hope you didn't do any damage yesterday. Was gonna stop by on the way home and grab my water jug, but you didn't pick up and I said fuckit. I'll come get it in a couple weeks when you're free.

Start with replacing the radiator cap.
