Alternator shat out on me AGAIN. Thinking it might be time to do the big 3. Went with an Ultima from O'Reilly's and hopefully the voltage regulator doesn't fail on this one. Ended up replacing the washers stacked to keep the alternator in place on the block. Had a 7/8 inch shock shaft that made a perfect chunk of bar stock. The stack of washers I previously used....

14.4 volts steady and a much better fit on the alternator bracket.
Nice work.

Found some time to make an update. Started working on buttoning up the interior and I decided I wanted to start making plans for accessory storage and an electrical hub. My idea was inspired by driving around in little single cab land cruisers and I thought it would be neat to build a bulkhead.

Here's where it gets tricky. I've decided I don't want a swingout for the sake of saving weight and keeping from hanging a ton of stuff off the back of the bumper. I've gained some inspiration from some pretty slick tire mounts.

With the tire in, the plan is to build drawers around the tire, and slide out tables from underneath each drawer.

Curious to hear some thoughts on my take for storage/tire mounting.

Not a bad idea but it's going to add a ton of weight over the axle.

Making room to tub the inner fenders already, huh? nice.

Maaaaaaaaybe :peep: it won't be for tire clearance, more so for a set of coilovers to clear (which will inadvertently force me to tub a bit. The tank I'll also be going in underneath, so I need all the room I can get out of the rear of the vehicle.

My thoughts were that it would be better over the axle than 4-5' behind it? I could be thinking wrong here. The panel weighs about 30 ish lbs

I was taut the rule of thumb is the shocks/coilovers c the weight behind the axle as X2 for how it effects them.... just what I was taut, sure there is a math formula for said

@clearock That's interesting, I've always heard and been instructed that weight above or in front of the rear axle will be best in most offroad conditions because you suffer less from the light-steering affects that a really heavy-rear-load will cause. This might be a good discussion in a suspension thread. My understanding of the physics behind weight distribution is that the more weight past a fulcrum point will create a larger moment arm past what we can call the fulcrum or pivot point (the axle in this case). That larger moment will reduce the effectiveness of the shocks internal damping.

In essence, there will still be weight spread out from the centerline of the axle to @eimkeith badass rear bumper including a 20gal tank, but it won't have 120lbs of swingout and 70lbs of tire dangling off the very end of the truck, which is the whole point of bringing it in.

I think weight distribution really depends on purpose and balance. If you have too much weight in the rear of a rock crawler it won’t have much traction climbing ledges n shit.
Too much weight in the front of a prerunner will be hard to keep the front end skipping across the top of things.
I think it’s all about balance though. Many desert trucks push the motor back quite a bit so the weight is further back behind the front axle and less weight has to sit off the back behind the rear axle. Some guys run fuel cells and dual spares behind the axle to keep the rear end planted and offset some of the unsprung weight from the heavy rear axle.
All that rear weight would suck for a rock crawler though.
It’s all about balance and purpose.

Totally, the goal here is to have close to a 50/50 split woth maybe a bias to the front of the truck seeing as the terrain is chunky and steep, generally slower/more technical driving and the roads are extremely curvy here in the mtns on the east coast which warrants more responsive steering from the front end. So far I think I'm somewhere on the right track.

Today I squeezed the rollbar in to get an idea for how and where I will integrate the tire mount to the floor/roll bar overhead...

Thinking of a tray perhaps like one of these or a tube tray to shave off some weight
