@AssBurns Tower V2.0.PNGTower V2.1.PNG

Here's the final production model. This is something I will save if someone wants to do the same thing one day.

Towers are all done and time to do a quick FEA on it to get a safety factor. Looking to get an accurate corner weight for a reasonably build 4Runner. Any ideas?

Oops! Minor hiccup... after the FEA, clearly I overlooked the amount of force localized on the leading edge of the tower. Time to fix that! I just threw a number in there to have a general idea 1500lbs of radial load to have a ballpark corner weight. In addition I put in a weldment because Inventor doesn't like parts that are not joined.

Learning experiences.... FEA Caution.PNG
At the points drawn, the radial load was not distributed evenly which in turn starts to deform stuff.

The VM nmber to illustrate critical failure points. That's no bueno. although not a huge number, This is not ok...

Something to think about with that FEA is that you will have a shock sandwiched in there and a bolt holding it all together. That will definitely change the model for better strength.

Another thing you could do to make it more rigid is bring those tabs all the way back to the shock tower. That'll help tie it all in together.

For sure. I am actually doing that as we speak because I decided it would make it easier dimensionally.

Also, what's the reason to do the 1.5" DOM tube there instead of just run a longer bolt with 3/4" DOM? The 1.5" tube doesn't seem to add any structure to anything.
If its to have a cleaner look for the bolts to be recessed, you could always put a cap on the inside of the 1.5" tube with the 3/4" tube welded to it to keep the tabs from deflecting under load.

@AssBurns The main reason I want the 1.5" tube in there running all the way to the shock tab is to alleviate some of the load from the tab to the side of the tower, and to hide that thru-bolt for the coilover. Believe it or not the 1.5" tube made a significant difference when I brought it all the way in to the coilover tab. The simulation was a lot cleaner. It will sit in there recessed and there's enough room for me to get a socket in the side of it should I need to remove it. Here you can see that the bolt sleeve is inside the larger 1.5" tube tucked away.

Yeah that looks way better and I'm sure going all the way through made a huge difference in strength.
Looking forward to seeing it all completed!

Thanks! Once this is done, installed, and running.... I want to get started on some stock width LCA's. I remember seeing some stuff that you ended up designing either on t4r or elsewhere. I have garnered some inspiration from several LT LCA's including your own. Have you progressed with them since ? @AssBurns

I've gotten majority of things done on the LCA's. I am just working on buttoning up the steering, then it's off to get cut and bent for me to weld. I've just been slammed with work and other projects lately, so I've had little time and motivation to get it finished. I really need to get on finishing that soon though. I have thread somewhere on here with the most recent updates.

Don't mind my ignorance on the threads here. I'm a freshie to the forum, but I would be remiss if I didn't admit to myself that I have almost no motivation to get onto T4R anymore. It's like a ghost town. I'll be updating as soon as I get these parts cut out for both sides here shortly. I'm realistically thinking a week and a half, but i also need to get some 3"x18"x 600lb springs... (thanks @AssBurns )

On that note... parts list is made and nested into a sheet with efficiency and cost!

It's pretty quiet around here too. Forums in general I think have gotten slower since most people use social media to communicate now.

Unless there’s a different T4R that I don’t know about (aside from 4Runners.com which is where I prefer to discuss things) the T4R that I know of is hundreds of pages of people being silly. “Oh, I just bought a new Limited and I got a chip in my paint. Should I ask for a lemon law vehicle replacement?” I have no tolerance for that crap. I barely go there anymore.

oh snap; was just referencing this yesterday from T4R - didn't realize you were over here as well! (I'll try to catch up.)

- edit for full disclosure: Mr. Snufflelufagus and I are working on this too. ;)
