The tight stuff is all jackpine sand and poplar mud in the forest, mitigated by the occasional clearing that a river or Creek runs through.

And it's all fucking bottomless. The swamp land will swallow vehicles. There are times when you can feel the vehicle sinking as you get out to winch.

In the winter with a set of big tires you can go out and get through 3' of snow at any given moment. In that situation I don't much care about being locked. There's no traction. You're basically driving a boat.

If you want the front locked for cheap just put in a lunchbox. You've got manual hubs so you won't notice it on the street. As soon as you lock the hubs the lunchbox is there. It's really the best option for what you want to do and it's not that much more then a spool.

No. Lunchbox lockers are Garbo.

When a 4.0 jeep will trash the lunchbox in a d30, it's a fuckin joke.

Lots and lots of folk run lunchboxes with no issue. While not nearly as strong as an ARB or a spool they'll do what you want for cheap. It doesn't sound like you'll be wheeling hard crawling trails so I bet you would be fine with one. Your call. The last thing I would do is spool the front. If your bound up you will not be able to turn. That's why all trophy trucks run ARB or Zip.

I refuse to run something that gets trashed behind a 4.0YJ on 31s.

If my sister can trash a lunchbox in 6 months, I will in a week.

Maybe I'll just wait to get a proper Detroit.

Your sister trashed a rear lunch box?

She's a bit of a ho, honestly. But it's a service to humanity when women like dick, so I can't argue.

Sounds like she was driving like an idiot. It's pretty hard to toast a lunch box locker. Probably jamming around corners and it kept locking up.

Started while she was wheeling. Now she's running a clutch pack LSD.

I realize you're an arrogant fuck who likes being right and thinks he's the smartest shit ever cause he's from California (Christ it's like I'm describing myself as an American), but once in a while the Canuckistanian knows.

Lunchbox lockers are not long term solutions. They mount like a mini spool, replacing the spider gears, and rely on fucky little springs to do their job. A dogtooth G80 is a better option, and it's a fucky little POS.

Not to mention that lunchboxes have skyrocketed in price. You used to be able to get an Aussie locker for 300 bucks. Now they're double that.
Fuck that noise. I'm not paying Detroit money for a fuckin powertrax.

A Detroit torque activated carrier replacing locker I'd run, but I dislike that most auto lockers unlock when not under torque and require you to spin up again.

*Grumble* probably just bite the bullet for a real locker.

I don't give a fuck if I'm right or wrong. I know people personally that daily and wheel with lunch box lockers and have been for multiple years without failure. We've already established your sister is a fucking idiot, she was probably driving on street like a fucking idiot too before it blew out on dirt.

There's some asshurt! :flipoff::rofl:

And I personally know people who trash shitty little spider gear replacing lunch box lockers cause they're shit.

So hey look bud, we both have anecdotal evidence. I'll avoid shitty lunchbox lockers, kthxbai.

If you actually didn't care, you wouldn't be spewing vitriol in here about someone you've never met or heard of beyond making a shitty dirty joke and saying she's an idiot for driving a YJ on 31s.
By the way, we established she's a bit of a ho, not a fucking idiot. Pay attention.
Maybe she should buy a 4runner so it can be broken all the time.

Sorry not sorry.

Least she ain't got any kids or lawyer bills! :flipoff:

Real talk, I blame the shitty 35. There's nothing good about a 35. A 44 with a lunchbox woulda never died. Not on fucking 31s. Her 35 needs more than just the lunchbox replaced with a set of spiders. There's a reason I'm chucking an 8.8 in there.

Most people here tend to leave the rear unlocked or run an LSD and then a more aggressive front locker. By the time you need 4x here, the front locker helps a ton. Also keeps the vehicle more streetable. I tend to agree. I'd run an open rear and a locker in the front before the other way around.

Using such anecdotal evidence I should refuse to drive a Toyota because a buddy of mine blew a motor at 12000 miles. Granted, he's an idiot and forgot to add oil after an oil change but that motor did blow. lol

See later post, I blame the shitty axle that it was to begin with.

I haven't posted much about what I'm looking for with this Rodeo, or what I'm collecting to put into it, but I'm after about 380hp and 37s. That's the goal. Engine/driveline swap and bigass tires.

I don't trust a locker that fits where the spider gears fit to hack that. That leaves me with a spool or a carrier replacement.

That's the info you should have led with.

Based on that I'd highly recommend just saving some extra pennies and going with ARB. They are the strongest currently available. Simply put, they do not break.

As far as spooling the front goes, I can tell if I forgot to turn off my front locker after an obstacle within 20 feet of driving. It affects steering that much. A spool is about a 5th of the cost of an ARB but your gonna regret it. Also, once a year ARB runs a buy a locker get a free compressor promo. Check ARBs site and see when they plan on doing it this year. It's usually right about now.

There's also going the used route. ARB tech hasn't changes in years so finding a used one would be the cheapest option. Check Pirate4x4. If you are sure you want to try a spool first what about saving the money on the spool and just welding the front diff?

I've been keeping things under wraps with the project because I don't like saying "I'm gonna do this and do that" and not do it because life happens.

I dislike air compressors, would run an E locker easier, buy they aren't as tough. I'll keep an eye out for a used ARB, but a compressor is another thing to fail.

I here you. I keep most of my shit under wraps until it's done. There's no bragging rights until it's finished anyway. lol

True. Anything can fail but would you rather have no front locker or no front diff? A compressor or air line break is a pretty easy fix. The only issue with ARB's has been leaking bonded seals but that's been resolved in the last year. If you do get an ARB try and avoid lockers from 1/2017 to 6/2019.
