Lets get some info together, post up:
1: What tire size?
2: What gears are you running?
3: What brand gears?
4: Why did you choose these gears?
5: Engine and tranny configuration(auto/manual).

1: 4.88s
2: nitto I think. Whatever ecgs uses
3: needed gears after a blown rear and planned to run 35s. Everything I read and others I talked to said go 4.88s I'd be happier on the auto transmission
4: 4.0 v6 4th gen runner
5: 315/75/16 km2s

You want to add tire size to that list? It's the biggest contributing factor when choosing a gear set.

97 4Runner 3.4L Auto Dual locked Dual cased on 35's and Nitro 5.29s

I chose Nitro because thet have an excellent reputation, friends have run them for years with no issues and it's what ECGS builds there diffs with. I chose 5.29 because, well, 35's. lol

Good point on the tires. Edited my post.

1 - stock 4.10s
2 - who cuts gears for toyota?
3 - they came in the truck, I dont feel like spending money on these differentials, clutch smoke smells good, and when I blow them I've been able to buy complete 3rds/clamshells for $40 each (and that's Canadian money, pretty sure it works out to like 8 freedom bucks)
4 - 3.4L, 5 speed with factory rear locker, 315/75/16

I think its time you upgrade to 4.56 or 4.88 for that 5speed to be a little peppier.

Meh, I just hold my shifts a little longer and cruise in 4th gear if there's strong headwinds or the highway isn't flat. I'm normally down to third gear for most climbs in the mountains anyway. That, and I'm normally not the slowest truck in group.

Money will be spent on dual cases long before the diffs get touched.

What gears you talking about?

5.29?
2.28?
4.7?
3.954?

A combined 224:1?

OK. I'll play.

5.29(diff) x 2.8(auto 1st gear) x 2.57(stock chain drive case) x 2.22(crawl box) = 86.8

Since I'm an auto my torque converter effectively doubles my crawl ratio so 86.8 x 2 = 173.6 final crawl ratio. It's slowwwwwww. lol

1: What tire size?
315/75R16 (35’s)

2: What gears are you running?
5.29
3: What brand gears?
Nitro I guess based on what others said ECGS uses
4: Why did you choose these gears?
I don’t drive a lot of highway at 80+mph, and wanted to get some torque back for crawling playing in the desert. Our engines don’t mind a little bit higher RPM’s.
5: Engine and tranny configuration(auto/manual).
3.4L V6 - Auto

I'm in
1. 35x12.5R17 MTR's but if they ever come out of the molds Pitbull Rocker Radials
2. 4.88:1
3. Nitro = ECGS
4. Because DD with 5speed. If I had it to do over again I would go 4.56's because dual cases.
5. 3.4 super charged 5speed R150F

Stock 4runners are undergeared to begin with imo, I have big tires and a lot of added weight, I want to give my motor as much help as possible and the 3.4 doesn't make power until after 2500 rpm so might as well let it rev. I also believe the myths of "4.88 is stronger than 5.29" to be just that, myths. They have the exact same contact patch which is where the strength comes from. So same strength and more power? win win to me.

Overall I love this setup, cruises great on the highway up to 80mph with good power and has plenty of torque for crawling. I sit dead nuts on 3000 rpm at 80mph fwiw

How are you liking those tires? It’s most likely what I will go with when I get 35s and 5.29s.

Just something to consider below of the Ring/Pinion tooth counts. Once you start getting into the higher gear ratios, the pinion gear gets smaller. So considering the below gear ratios, 3.73 would be the strongest followed by 4.30. Well I've broken two sets of 4.30 already (once with 33's and another with 35's) Both of those breakages were avoidable if I drove a little smarter. I have broken a set of 5.29 gears, but that was due to the backlash adjuster not being set properly (poor install), causing the whole carrier to shift to the side almost an inch and not have any contact between the ring and pinion gears. Chipped/chewed up the pinion gear a little, but the cause was from install, not gear strength.

3.73 = 41/11
3.90 = 39/10
4.10 = 41/10
4.11 = 37/9
4.30 = 43/10
4.56 = 41/9
4.88 = 39/8
5.29 = 37/7
5.71 = 40/7

I do believe that 4.88 is stronger than 5.29, but how much is what I don't think is as big of an issue as people claim. Smart driving is more important IMO. Too bad we don't have a 5.71 option for our front diff's or I would have probably gotten that ratio instead.
