Well, in preping the truck for Moab this week, I found I already bent the driver side inner tie rod.... Yes, it was an OEM one. I now have 2 more spares from Low Range Off road. Which got shipped in a trail gear box so really, they are TG Tie Rods. They are however, made in Japan. I'll get some comparison pictures of the two but the Trail Gears are bigger in diamater so time will tell if they hold up. If they do bend, heimed steering might be next on the list. Then I'll be the one to tell you if that causes the rack and pinion to blow up.

Low Range is owned by Trail Gear.

But I’ll be right behind you on the Heim Steering. I wonder how much abuse the stock Rack can take. I haven’t broken one yet, nor have I bent a tie rod, but I do seem to wear out the tie rods pretty quickly.

I think the 2nd gen Tacoma has a bigger rack than yours... much like other things. Ha.

I wonder where marlin crawlers upgraded rack and pinion is at in development/production...

No shit right? Wtf. I understand the lack of metal due to the tariffs but damn, come on. not even a modified tundra rack and pinion?

I’ve been wondering about doing a tundra/sequoia rack as well. I know with the newer tacos and tundras the tundra rack is beefier I remember seeing a article about a ifs hilux in Iceland on 42s with a Landcruiser rack and I thought it had a bigger diff too. Also I’ve heard that Solo Motorsports can beef up our factory racks but they have nothing in their website about it, for now I’m just running a Detroit gear and axle rack with a warrantee from Amazon. I would think another notion would be to mount a hydro assist ram behind the rack and fab new tie rods for it, but I’m not sure how well this would work

having a bigger rack and pinion with more assist would be nice. before that, we are all more focused on better inner and outer rod ends. my last OEM outter and inner's only lasted 2ish months before they were blown out (Truck only has 11K miles) .4 hard days in Moab did them in. both outer and one inner was shot.

I'm really thinking of going heimed steering if this set of TG inner's don't hold up for more than 6 months. two TG inneres $95 shipped, two new moog outters, $50. so $145, 2-3 times a year it might be worth it at this point. I might be the one to find out how the rack and pinion will hold up for the rest of us...

I gotta find out why my rack and pinion keeps randomly leaking, and then quitting, then randomly leaking again.

A beefier rack would be pretty damn sweet, but finding/modifying something with the correct widths would be tough. I think it would be easier to find something that has a little bit narrower width and make some inner tie rod spacers to match the width, rather than modifying something that is wider to be narrow enough. (Just has to be strong enough to work)
Not sure about a hydro assist on a rack & pinion. I'm sure it would work, but has more moving parts, and would probably only benefit in the rocks for ease of steering, but probably won't make things stronger. You could always do a Howe rack. It's like a full hydro mixed with a rack and pinion. But $$$$

Yeah I'm on the same page. My inners lasted only a couple months. Outers will probably need to be replaced soon too. Heim's are much needed. I wonder how much longer they will actually last though?

I don't know how much longer they will last, but I have to imagine a double heim is going to last longer than the ball and socket/ball joint. I'm so tired of the front of my truck. tie rods, blown wheel bearing (thanks Moab) and lower uniballs and some mystery clunk that I still cannot find.

Well, I priced it out and sort of guestimated the sizes the best I could while at work. So ordering rod ends, threaded tie rods, jam nuts, misalignment spacers, bolts and Camburg expensive as all the whores in vegas clevis adapter kit, we are looking about $550 all said and done to convert over to heim steering.

Camburg isn't joking around with their $200 price tag for two bolts and two clevises. considering for only $100 more, you can get all other parts needed INCLUDING 4130 Chromoly threaded and cut to lenght tie rods.

One last item that you'll want to do, is make the rod end at the spindle a double sheer mounted.

As for the measurements I am unsure of at this point:
-Tie Rod length
-I am not sure if the 5/8" bolt is the right size for the spindle. I went with 5/8" because it was the biggest bolt you can fit through the 3/4 inch misalignment spacers. The spindle tie round mount is tapered. Back when All-pro used to offer this, they had a fancy bolt that they used some sort of which craft to create (as seen in this thread: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/all-pro-offroad-tie-rods.84435/).

Yeah shit ain’t cheap! Heims and misalignment spacers alone are gonna cost you $200 for good ones. Add in all the other parts and it’s easily $500. That’s why I haven’t done it yet haha.

You could always drill out the outer taper at the spindle. I think someone makes the tapered adapter slugs to make it straight for a bolt.

At the rate I'm going, i'll be spending $500 a year on inner and outer tie rods. Best case would be getting 12 months of life out of the Heimed rod ends then it's only $150 year.

Solo does the modified tundra rack, but it's a ton of fab work. It's a second gen tundra rack shortened down.

For the first gen guys I saw a few guys this year make a swing steer with a Saginaw box.

Yeah I've seen that too. I actually thought about that he other day as I was reading this thread. I wonder if it's worth ditching the rack & pinion for that though. It would be fairly easy to mount hydro assist to though, which would be great in the rocks.

I saw this on the other day.
