So like a older Polaris scrambler quad? Variety of motors, 4wd, ifs and Shaft driven, and automatic
Exactly! Doesn’t have to any specific model, but those are the requirements. I can easily build extended A arms and extend the CV’s for long travel down the line when they get older and faster. I just want something that can the kids can have for a while and have plenty of room to grow into size and power wise. And easily modified to make stronger and faster.

Start with basically the quad dimensions or a little bigger to make it two seater. And when you want bigger tires, fab up some portals for wider track and improved gearing for larger tires. :beerscheers:

I've thought about this very thing. and I've come to the conclusion that I will build my boys a kids Rock lizard at some point in the next year or so. I have everything sitting in my shed except engine and trans/xfer. For less than the cost of a newish quad I think I could get it done.

1500 for a welded chasis isn't bad for something like that.

Probably no portals. I’m going to look into which quads have locked front diffs and if gearing options are available. I figure if I get at least a 350 motor, it can handle the extra weight of two kids and tube chassis, then look into gearing options if I do bigger than 30” tires.

I want to see one of those in action. I’d like to see it do more than just rock crawl. When I was a kid, I had little interest in slow speed crawling, I just wanted to go as fast as I could ride anything. That’s why I think going IFS up front will be the best option for my build. Still having 4wd will let them do some crawling but I think it should be focused on higher speed comfort.
I wonder how bad the shipping is.
Probably has a lot to do with whether it’s fully welded or on a pallet.

If I'm lucky I can get @Hank to trailer it back to me since they're in Utah, otherwise I'm sure it's damned near a car hauler if it's fully welded.

I'm sure it goes truck freight either way. Part of me likes the idea of buying a chassis built, and the other part of me says to just buy some steel and a bender...

Making IFS arms isn't hard.

You could use taco spindles to make hubs/bearings/diffs/half-shafts easy too.

IFS arms aren’t that hard to build for something like this, but I don’t want to have to reengineer everything with custom parts either. I can use a quad drivetrain and front suspension, then just get custom CV axle shafts and make longer arms down the line. If I went with the Tacoma parts, I’d have to narrow the diff, have more weight and take up more space. Sure it’ll be stronger but this will be a small wheelbase with relatively small tires. I doubt I’d go bigger than 32” tires.
With a quad I can literally cut the front bulkhead off and reuse it on the tube chassis with little modifications if I wanted. Use stock steering, and suspension with little need for changes depending on what atv I end up with.
Wheelbase goal would be around 75-80”. That way I could fit it into a truck bed with the tailgate down. I think that would be the perfect length for 30-32” tires.

Very true. Quad hubs should be able to handle a 30" tire. Not like it has to last for highway miles.

I haven't started to put real thought into dimensions yet.

I agree but don't want my kids to go too fast lol. with some air shocks and early toy (55" wms ) and 35's I would think 45 mph is not out of the question and then they crawl well too. I'm trying to convince my wife that we need a kid AND an Adult set. They would be awesome together.

And I have a buddy in Utah that comes to town on a regular basis to visit his folks. Free Shipping. Woot Woot

I’ll have a throttle governor on it. Maybe even a speed controller if I can figure out how. 45mph is definitely fast for say an 8 year old, but for a 12 year old, I say let it rip if they can actually drive it. I don’t think it really needs to go more than 45mph. It just needs to have power to actually be able to go 45mph without needing a landing strip to reach those speeds.

Twin buggies would be pretty rad! I doubt I’d ever do it but it would be fun to have a kids and full size one.
