But the 2010+ FJs have the 8.2 like the 5th gen, right?

I wish it were as simple as bolting a '10+ third member onto a 8" housing but noooo Mr. T had to go and change the bolt pattern :violin:

Thought they were all the same 8" but I've been called wrong a few times tonight. Haha. So far as I know the fj never matched the 5th gen 8.2"

You are right. I did not know that the FJ’s switched over in 2010+ models. Supposedly it’s a decent upgrade too.

Here’s a thread I found. Scroll down to the post from JustDifferentials.com

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.fjcruiserforums.com/forums/misc-technical-discussion/223369-rear-8-2-axle-they-same-between-fj-taco-4runner-2.html?amp=1

May have to look into this. Lot more FJs came with the rear locker than the 5th gens. If it's not a ton of work to make fit it could be worthwhile to do if I start having issues with my 8" all the time.

I wonder if it’s really worth the cost to upgrade? Wonder how much you could sell your current axle for to help fund a new one.

Also are the 8.2 e-lockers any stronger or weaker than the non e-locker 8.2?
For the 8” the e-locker version is definitely weaker.

Probably not because I'd have to regear it and potentially do fabrication work to make it fit right. I'll have a spare 3rd setup with 4.88s in it by the end of summer and I still have another 2 1/2 years on my ecgs warranty. So I've got some time to worry about it.

A complete 5th gen 8.2" rear axle is a direct drop-in for a 4th gen 8". I know the towers on the 8.2" are beefier than the 8", but I'm not sure how that plays in to e-locker vs non-locker.

It seems like e-locked 8.2s go for about $1700-2000 and non-locked about $1200-1800. I don't know if you'd be able to sell your 8" for more than a few hundred bucks

I'm debating between shelling out more for an 8.2" upgrade vs regearing and locking my 8" and getting good at rebuilding diffs myself.

My 8" is regeared and air locked, I'm sure I could get a few grand for it

Found some dirt near my house and tested the e-locker again. This thing is just weird. I managed to get it to engage but it took a bit of driving and messing with the on/off switch. I heard/felt it engage after I hit the off button and noticed the light stay on, hit the on button and it stayed solid red and was engaged. Took quite a bit of driving to get it to disengage too.
Glad it is working but does not seem very useful on the trail if I need it. When I regear in the future I will take a closer look at it.

They can be finicky. Just gotta click it on regularly and it should work when you need it. When I got stuck in the mud back in December I was surprised when my Tacoma locker engaged because I hadn't hit the button in years.

Pull the actuator. Should be 3 12mm bolts and super easy to pull off. It super dirty, just clean it up and lit it back on. Try to engage it often to keep it working smoothly.
