They'll wear out and blow eventually, regardless how fast you're going, and then you'll have to replace them. They really aren't as strongly built as the big 4. Do that enough times and you could have paid for a shock that you can rebuild as many times as you need to. Aftermarket shocks really aren't that expensive and rebuilds are cheap and easy if you can do it yourself.
I get what you mean, rebuilding shocks isn’t hard by any means. However, I’ll probably only have to change them again once, MAYBE twice in the lifetime of this vehicle.

Scored a 4:56 3rd member for $200 off someone locally, and found the matching front diff for $250 an hour away. (Yeah I know “just go 4:88’s” and my answer is no, I’m keeping this as budget as possible.)
Big score for me, I’m currently waay undergeared with these 3:91’s, especially up in the mountain passes. Going to throw an Aussie locker in the rear. Whipped up a playe to weld the the bottom of the axle housing to beef it up a bit.

Only problem with used gears is you don't know how abused they were. Otherwise, good score.

Yeah that’s always a concern with anything used. They’re out of a stock vehicle. Ring and pinion look fine to me, backlash was still within spec. For the money, I’ll take the chance. It’s still cheaper than buying a full gear set, so if something happens I’m not down too bad. Going to 4:56 from 3:91 is going to be a huge improvement.

started building this diamond plate storage box that’s notched to fit over the wheel well. I’ll keep spare cv’s and tools and what not in it. Waiting on some hinge and a latch to put the cover on it. (I hate welding diamond plate)IMG_9874.jpeg

Even if you hate it you are good at it.
Let me guess, it pisses you off that the head gets wonky when you get to the diamonds?

That’s only mildly annoying, you learn to deal with it though. Diamond plate is just more annoying to work with and prep, and it always seems to be much dirtier than regular aluminum, so the prep is just extra. Aluminum isn’t exactly my forte anyways, stainless/inco/hast/titanium is my expertise.

My brother laying some 7018 on my job site.
I could almost do that good on a 2F.

@pentfab You're the opposite of 'braggadocious' and I love it. Keep putting more in here. I'm living vicariously through reading this thread while I collect parts.
Thank you, I appreciate it. That’s the martial arts in me, haha. This stuff didn’t happen nearly as fast as I posted it. My friends were on me to share it with other people, so here I am back dating everything. This forum seems to be more on page with what I do than the other 4Runner forums and groups.

If you mean we have less mall crawlers, you would be correct

Exactly that…. And elitist. Lots of people prepping to run the “big trail” one day, only to run a fire road. I also enjoy seeing people actually build stuff on their own and not just bolt on every part they can, that just becomes a matter of disposable income.
Those guys left....

Left work, grabbed my kid and hit a couple trails, nothing too crazy as we were alone, but never the less a good time. Last picture is of that that obstacle looks like during the day.
