My fucking CV axle flew out my diff on the freeway.

Title says it all. I had just finished rebooting my torn af CV today with a kit from offroad solutions, got it all buttoned back up and went for a test drive. All was well, put it in AWD with the multimode on the 99, still good. Turned onto the highway and I start to get a rumble under my feet. Within a few seconds, crazy grinding and sad as fuck noises coming from my diff. I got it back into 2wd as quick as it would let me and pulled off at the 1st exit. Fluid was pouring out of the diff and the axle was half out. Pushed it back in as well as I could and drove home. Ripped the thing out and noticed that the snap ring that came with the kit is undersized and doesn’t pertrude at all from the splines unlike the original which was bulky. Diff and CV got a little banged up and notice some light shavings but nothing died. But now my truck is down until I get a new snap ring from Toyota and I’m not happy.82061704-E9A8-4946-B353-F89D1BC3D1BA.jpeg

Moral of the story…
Don’t buy this kit from offroad solutions.
Rebooting is annoying, should have bought a fucking Napa new.

What the actual fuck? I ran autozone CVS for awhile and never had an issue with them other than a torn inner boot.

Foreal. Thought it went into the diff a little too easy when I put it all back together. Obviously the snap ring did nothing. Why sell a 3rd gen specific kit if it doesn’t work properly…

Until you posted this shot I didn’t realize the kit snap ring was still in the axle - not from the first photo. Wow
Yeah that shit was garbage. I got a Toyota snap ring and now it’s working fine but my seal must have been damaged because I’ve been dumping oil. Going to have to drive it home 200 miles and put a new seal in this week.

lets start a CV damage thread.
was rebuilding some axles off a car for longer shafts and reusing the stock CV. noticed some heat signature on the housing. decided to completely break down the CV and investigate.

seems like the engineer designed the bearings to ride the edge of the race (assuming to increase CV angle)
race itself is toast. deformation on the race, cracking on the journals etc.

order complete assemblies for all 4 corners. proper snap rings in place
