I don't do paint corrections for my profession but I know my way around a vehicle doing paint corrections and coatings.

I've done close to 80-90 full paint corrections for friends/family members/ people who people know that need a good paint refresh and detail over the last 10 years. So other than not doing it day in and day out I would call myself a 7/10 on the profession scale especially based against you mouth breathers that don't know how to turn a hose on to your trucks .

I have experienced a good bit with "high tech" coatings over the last few years since they have been on the market.

DO NOT!

I repeat

DO NOT!

Waste your money on the stupid instagram/fb/myspace heavily advertised bullshit nano ceramic coatings specifically the hydrosilex and f11 top coat. those are gimiky AF. its a damn spray wax. It's designed to resist water right after you spray it on just like they do in the video. After one trip to the mud and a wash after, that BS coating would be gone.

If you dont know what a random orbital polisher, cutting/polishing compound or clay bar is or don't know how to use all 3 of those I would find a buddy that does.

Paint work and protection is all in the prep work the removing oxidation and contaminants from your vehicles paint before you apply a wax/sealant/ceramic coating. If you start with a dusty ass, bird shit laden paint job you will end up with sub par results if you try and use one of these paint coating products.

There are some good youtube videos on good coatings to get you up to speed on what you need to know.

I ceramic coated the vertical surfaces (hood, roof, trunk) on my onyx black B7 A4 Audi last month before the snow started to fly here in Utah, for the few mornings I've had to push snow and ice off my car it has been a miracle!

Black paint can be a nightmare to keep clean and I'm not meaning just left the spin car wash clean I mean swirl free, with a good true ceramic coating you can have a dark colored vehicle be swirl and scratch free even after taking offraod and getting it super dusty and dirty and taking a dry towel to it!

I second this. Im by no means a professional detailer, but I do have more knowledge on the topic than most and my uncle has been a professional detailer for the last 20 years or so and he now works at one of the largest 3m dealers in the nation training people on their products. All the heavily marketed spray on "ceramic" coats are absolute shit. You cant have a semi-permanent coating that you just spritz on like you sneezed on the truck. When I coated mine I got a kit from cquartz which seems to be a middle-grade coating but it works very well. However, the coatings that are worth anything wont actually stick to your paint if it isnt properly cleaned. I had to go through a 3 stage cleaning process before I was able to apply the coating and then the truck had to sit in the garage for a day for the coating to cure.

But the basic process I do twice a year which seems to keep the paint in excellent shape and easily cleanable after trails is, wash it, clay bar the shit out of it, wash it again with an iron fillings remover, cut and polish the paint with a DA to remove all the heavy scratches and swirl marks. Then seal the paint with the ceramic coat. It takes the better part of a day but to me is worth it to have a really clean truck inside and out. I absolutely HATE working on a truck that is dropping dirt and shit in my eyes all the time and it's just nice to be able to just wipe bugs off the windshield rather than scrub. Plus its easier to spot broken parts or potential problems when things are clean

Help me out here. What steps exactly make does performing a paint correction entail? I do detailing a lot at work, love it actually bought a Rupes 21 for personal use and friends.... I think I'm confused between the difference between paint correction and 3 stage. I know what paint correction does, I'm just not sure if clay baring, using a cuting compound and a polish all together is technically what paint correction is defined as.... also rum influenced this botched typing :afro:

So what I call a full correction is

-through wash
-Clay bar/pad
-a few steps of compounding depending on the amount of oxidation and paint type
-polish step to remove any miro maring from the compounding/cutting process
-protective coating. this could be a natural wax, synthetic sealant, ceramic coating
-finish glaze (jeweling) you would only do this on top of a wax usually
