you certainly should always have a test light in your tool box and a multi-meter too if you can swing it, especially for the trail. There's a decent Craftsmen digital multi-meter at Sears for 15-20 bucks, you don't need anything fancy.You are correct, which is also something I don’t have. Never had the need to. until NOW! Unfortunately lol. Live and learn.
ypu should find and post the 3rd brake light wire diagram, maybe the 3rd brakelight switch/relay is on the negative side of the circuit
