When I bought my '99 4runner the throttle cables were super loose and so was the kickdown cable. I tightened them up and it ran WAY better, but I am still having issues with the shifting from 2nd down to 1st at lower speeds when I pin it. When I'm going from 4th to 3rd it does alright and same from 3rd to 2nd. On my other 4runner I was having similar issues and it ended up being the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS). I replaced the TPS yesterday and it made no difference.

I'm wondering what else it could be that is causing it to not want to down shift at full throttle from 2nd to 1st gear.

Have you tried manually putting it into 2nd and pinning it at low rpms to see if it will shift? Can't think of too many situations I'd want that to happen anyway, high rpms in 1st gear aren't going to move you any faster than 2nd due to the ratios. 1st is almost always short.

Yeah it'll go manually. The issue is when I am getting on the freeway onramp or out of a corner. I coast into a corner in second and need to down shift into 1st to get the RPM's high enough to actually get moving again. But the issue is it just stays in 2nd and I'm moving too slow to really get up to speed quickly. I either have to quickly down shift manually or ride it out in second.

tighten the kick down cable more. also depending on fluids and transmission condition, might be something lurking in the depths of the trans that needs attention. shifts ok at low rpm with other gears? a bad valve is usually the culprit.

Kick down cable is maxed out. No room left for tightening without binding at full throttle.

Yeah I'm thinking it might be something bad in the trans. I was thinking about getting a TransGo shift kit so while it's apart I might look at what could be fucked up in there.

Sonnax has an O-ringed end plug kit (97741-19K) that helps with bleed by (the line pressure in the VB) during shifts that I put in when messing with the A340 VBs (they're cheap). Depending on what month in 99 ur 4runner was built u may have the 00-02 VB type 4. ATFspeed has a lot of upgrades, the Accumulator pistons that The TransGo kit provides different springs for, they have billeted replacements with extra o-rings and thicker (to do the same thing as stiffer springs) that help with shifting.

Haven't run the billeted ones yet (have a set for my current build)
I agree with kasnerd that it's probably ur 1-2 shift valve.

Thanks for the response!
I don’t know shit about transmissions, so there will be a slight learning curve.
So I should get the o-ringed end plug kit along with the transgo shift kit? Seems like something I can easily do on my own with basic tools and online instructions?

Yes, get both kits (Sonnax 97741-19k is for the 99 sept+ -02 4runner trans) & (Transgo 340-HD2 kit). It's been awhile so I could be off on the the month in 1999 that toyota started putting in the VB #4 into the A340 but regardless the Sonnax kit will still fit most of the plugs on the earlier VBs. Transgo Instructions with the kit are top notch and can easily be followed by someone with ur skill. Another thing I do when fucking with the A340 out of a 4runner is change out the front pump with one from V8 lexus (I'll have check if I can find my notes as to what models/yrs again (laptop failed with most of my misc info for said) but u can find said in some of the supra forums) to get the 22ish% improved pump volume, I just pull one out of a junkyard (as long as u inspected said pump u won't have issues running a used unit).

I have also replaced the earlier VB#1,2,3 with the VB4 on earlier A340 units.

Thanks! I ordered that TransGo shift kit last night, I'll get the Sonnax kit right now.
Good info on the V8 lexus pumps. I'll look into finding one of those while I'm in there. I assume it's also pretty easy to swap out.
Might as well get a new filter while I'm in there too.

I'm talking about the front pump on the trans which requires the removal of the unit from the 4runner unlike that other stuff that can be done by dropping the trans pan, but with that said it's not hard to pull the front pump. A slide hammer and the correct fitting for the end to screw into one of the two removal points cast into said pump (made my own). It's best to position the trans with the pump facing towards the sky when u pull said so that the front clutch pack doesn't shift forward (even if it does u just need to make sure u reposition them and get the pump set back in. It's a lot easier to mess with the VB with the trans out also, makes getting the accumulator pistons set back in cake, but I have done it both ways and it's not to bad working with the trans still in.
