Things happened.

Grabbed the donor rodeo from the boneyard. With us still daily driving the Rodeo, I'm going to get everything set up and built in this one, then transfer it over.

Plus, if it all goes horrifically wrong, I can just turf it all. In parts, I'm into this little deal for less than 350 bucks.

Engine lift, chuck er in neutral and back the trailer under it. Wasn't THAT easy but. . . I've done dumber shit.

Rough leaf placement. I'll be setting things so the wheelbase stays the same, or as close as I can get it. Going to go shackle forward because of the frame geometry. Shackle rear would give me too much lift. I'm running 35-38s, not 44s.

Hangers tacked in.

When I've got it going into the other Rodeo I'll box everything nicely and make it pretty with some 3/16 I have kicking around. Also going to keep the body mount accessible. Wasn't too worried about the body mounts on this one. :D

Hoping tonight to get the rear hangers tacked on and the old bushings out. By the end of the week I'd like the axle housing to be hanging there.

The weather has not been kind to that front end. Lots of cutting and welding a head.

This is my guinea pig. I'm not repairing any of it. Once the front end is in, it's getting pulled out and put in my other, much nicer, daily driver.

However, yes, I do have lots of cutting to do. IMG_20190924_222640.jpg
Gotta get rid of that crossmember.

Angles look ok under its own weight, although that shackle looks a little shallow.

This, I'm happy about.

Sorry it doesn't say Toyota on it, I forgot, that's the only acceptable car brand to modify.

I think tonight I might do some more digging on what's available for front axle shafts.

I'm not overly happy with my track width yet. It's still too wide by a fair shake. I can't seem to find (easily) a resource that essentially lists what stock lengths were.
I know the old Cherokees were narrow (60" WMS I believe), but I can't even get a part number for the shafts on them.
The reason I'd like to find something OEM from a narrow 30 spline 44 is so that if I break a shaft ( @Rapier46 you can laugh then) I don't have to wait on a custom length shaft again.

EDIT:
Nevermind, I figured it out. I'm the dumb. Lulz.

So my factory Jeep leafs aren't the same length as one another.

Nor is the distance from the hanger end to the centering pin.

:laugh::laugh:

Fuck I love 70s manufacturing.

The old shitbox is on its own weight.

Things actually look like they'll line up ok, minus the front driveshaft. I'll definitely need a CV to deal with the lateral angle.

But the pumpkin has room to move, the shock mounts on the leaf plates will actually line up with my factory shock towers, the bumpstops should hit the leafs just aft of the axle tube, and the drag link won't be overly angled.

If I could mount a high steer arm, the drag link would be flat. But these fucking jeep axles used Y steering. So that's out unless I cowboy up for knuckles. And that's not happening.

Overall, I'm happy so far. I'm dicing it up between buying my chromoly axle set (680 CAD for axles and U joints) or getting ball joints, wheel bearings, and lockout hubs in a couple of weeks.
The axles would mean I could get the gears and whatnot in the diff, the outer running gear means I can get it set on wheels for clearances, and if I need I can roll it out of the shop.

Finally making some damn progress! :beerscheers:

Do people use CV's with leafs? I kinda always figured they were used on linked trucks since the links can keep the pinion pointed however the links are designed to to be pointed. I never really thought about it on a leaf spring truck.

Well the pinion angle shouldn't change with leafs either. The shackles move forward, but the axle is held on the flat, lowest area if the spring, which doesn't rotate, it just moves forward. So the axle doesn't rotate.

The axle should only really rotate on a poorly laid out 4 link/5 link, or, with a true radius arm that mounts both top and bottom of the axle (like ford and dodge use now on their HD trucks.

The only reason I'd do a CV is because I am going to have a compound angle that is quite steep laterally.
Rough eyeball, it'd be 4" over 29" of driveshaft length.

While that isn't UNHEARD of (semis run all kinds of lateral angle between axles) it's enough to make me measure and ask a driveline shop. If I don't need a CV/Double cardan, I won't be using one.

Got my other C prepped today. Ground even and got the chunk of tube pressed out, ready to get beat back on and indexed for caster.

Not going to get anything done this weekend. Doing other things. Might make another topic about them.

Likely won't actually get fuck all done for two weeks. Decided to do the outer running gear as having tires on this thing is more important. Gotta be able to have it leave the shop.

So much for getting my Pajero.

Thing is way rougher than I was told. In a fight over money with a friend now. Don't expect to see it. Thankfully I paid fuckall for it.

Just wasted a shop weekend and enough money to buy my running gear. Which sucks.

What is a Pajero?

1991_mitsubishi_pajero-pic-37734-200x200.jpeg

Short wheelbase (in my case) Mitsubishi diesel 4x4 5spd.
Factory air locker, 5.13 gears, and a super slick 4x4 system that uses a silicone coupler to send power to the axle with the most traction.

Little underpowered from factory, 105hp/190ftlb, but waking up the 2.5 to about 150hp is a simple process. They're very choked off.

Unfortunately, the example I "purchased" is in need of much more than I was informed of. So I'm cutting my losses. As outright cool as it would be, I was hoping for something needing fuel system and and starting system work, not that plus a ton of electrical.

So as it turns out, the innards of an Isuzu 44 are near to identical to a 70s Wagoneer 44.

All but the outer pinion bearing, which can be swapped from the Jeep to the Isuzu pinion anyway.

So, if my eyechrometer is accurate, this weekend the fucking thing might have gears, and be on wheels.

Maybe.

I think.

So I forgot to get U-bolt nuts, so it isn't sitting on its own wheels yet.

I also found out, since I'm still in the process of getting my tools together from their various storage homes, that my bearing puller set went missing in "the great divide". Fuckers.

So, lacking that, my pinion bearing didn't get swapped. And I'm not buying a bearing puller set for one bearing. I'll pay the 30 bucks for the ag dealer here to do it.

But besides that, the outer gear is on, minus lockouts. Came out to a 61" WMS, which I am very happy with. If I can get to the spring shop tomorrow for nuts, I'll mount it.

Most of the stuff now is bolt in accessories and pieces. Just $$$ to wait on.

Be nice to get it to roll out of the shop, I need the space for other shit for a few days.
