I figured I would start a build thread on here as it looks like a few of you can actually weld and build stuff and may be interested. I have owned this truck since 2005 and wheeled it IFS on 33s with dual cases until 2016 when I did the axle swap. The goal of this truck is to drive 8+hrs to the trail, wheel hard stuff in SE parks and get me home. I don't have a trailer and I use this for truck stuff as well. My other goal is to keep it simple and not get too fancy with suspension and crap like that as I hate fabricating and love wheeling.

Here is my build thread on irate4x4 for a good summary of what has been done so far: https://irate4x4.com/threads/2002-turd.334704/

I also have a build thread in TW that's damn near real time when I did the SAS, so if you want to see a man unravel mentally post by post, search for it in the 1st gen build section.

The specs are:
2002 v6, 5 spd Tacoma
Dual cases with lefty, 4.7:1 gears and stuffed full of chromo parts
Flipped front fj60 axle, RCVs, 5.29s, Aussie locker
Rear fj80FF, with a spartan locker
7100s f/r
Rear up front FJ62 leaf springs
Fox air bumps
37" pro comp mt2's on pro comp beadlocks

Getting ready to cut the ass end of the truck off tomorrow to install new frame rails. I bent the frame bad at Harlan last year winching up and out of an obstacle and its full of rust holes and is cracking and I'm sick of dealing with it.

I called up Sschassisworx near Charlotte as they make custom bent frames and had them bend up a new rear section of frame out of 2x4x.188. good people, it was pretty cheap and they ship all over the country.

Pic below is from me meadureing using a plumb bob and the FSM. Frame was sagging 4" in the rear over stock, hence the highlift

The build plan:
Cut off rear frame at rear body mount.
Raise fuel tank
Install Chevy 63s
Install air bumps
Relocate shocks so they aren't pokeing through the bed
Slap factory bed back on and wheel

Why aren't I 4linking it? Because I have to haul shit, tube beds are dumb and useless for what I use the truck for, my beds already mangled all to fuck, and I want to have it back on the trail by the start of wheeling season and I know it will be a rabbit hole of a project, March.

Ask any questions!!

God damn! Well either way it looks like you were/are on borrowed time with that frame. Might be in your interest to start a search for a rolled taco or atleast one totaled by a rear end so you can salvage the front part of a from now. But atleast good to find out now rather than halfway up a obstacle.
Thinking wheel this for a few more years and find a 1st gen tundra or something to build.

I already found out once in an obstacle the rear of the frame was shit, that's why I am where I am now LOL!! The front cab mount forward is already 2x3.188 after I chopped it off for the SAS.

Welp that makes sense. And will be fine to go for a few years. Was just judging by the last pic that the cab forward could be shit. But if it's just under the cab you got time and can scab in just in case.

I'm thinking cut out where the sliders used to be and scab that and that should solve most of the glaring issues. The truck is getting the rockers cut out and replaced with 2x6 tubing instead of sliders when this is all said and done.

Yeah that will solve most. But still somewhat of a patch job. You mounted 3 points on each side or 2? Being it's only a AC you should be pretty good all around. And can plate if necessary. But all in all you should be great to run fir a long while. I just hate seeing vehicles we spend this much time on dying because of some stupid frame issues. I look forward to following what you got going on. And thankful I don't worry about these issues being in az. Good luck brotha!

3 legs. These were trail gear sliders and my first mod ever, I'd say I got my money out of them! I actually.tore them off the frame coming down a hill leaning into a tree a few years ago and booger welded the driver's side back on.

Just read through your build thread on TW and I'm a little concerned by how bad I want to start cutting up my 4Runner now.
In all honesty, the crawler was the best bang for the buck mod I ever did on this truck, get one of those before an axle swap. I had some of the most fun wheeling this truck when it was IFS on 33s and a crawl box, talk about a sleeper rig. The axle swap allowed me to run 37s and a front locker without really worrying about blowing stuff up and doing the stupid engage the locker disengage it, turn, engage it again dumbass tap dance everyone who is LT has to do while crawling.

I have been sick the past couple of weeks and haven't had a chance to work on the truck. Finally was able to get out in the garage tonight, not as long as I would have liked, but better than nothing. I spent most of the time cutting rusty chunks of frame off and grinding stuff. I would have had a rail tacked on but all my c clamps are either bent or broke, so I'll have to grab some this week. Plating this will be, uhh interesting!

The reason why I'm doing this, this is the rear most slider mount back by the spring hangar:

Finally got some shop time today. I had 2 tool failures right off the bat, my laser level took a shit and a jack failed, so that set me back. I have been chipping away at prepping the frame rails and cutting off old frame repairs, so it's slow going. I did however get a rail heavily tacked on and it's all level!

I'm going to fully burn it in one day after work and work on the other side. Should go much faster once that other rail is on.
