Thinking of getting a mountain bike. Deciding between 27.5 or 29er. Leaning towards the 27.5 since they are more nimble and less likely to bend a wheel when doing dumb shit that a mtn bike shouldn't do. Mostly for riding with my 5 yo son who just got his first mtn bike, but I'll be doing dumb stuff while he tries to keep up. Also would like to do some xc and mild downhill stuff so a full suspension would be really nice to have. I come from a background of bmx and moto, so I enjoy throwing things around and jumping (even though I shouldn't be doing that anymore), so a 27.5" is the direction I'm leaning so I can do more of that without bending wheels n shit. Curious to hear your guys thoughts on it.

I'm still on 26s I'm so old school, but I used to race cross country and lean towards hardtail and a slightly smaller frame (for me) with a steeper top tube angle (like Kona) for easier stand over and mount, but that's my personal preference. I also prefer Shimano clipless over toe clips or bmx pedals.

If you can get a full suspension with a lock out rear shock you can get the best of both worlds.

The heavier the bike the better workout you get but the heavier to carry (up the hike a bike sections)

Looking into getting some new tires soonish. What brands do you guys recommend, and absolutely hate?
I got 80k miles out of Hankook Dynapro ATs but they sucked on the trail. I'm really digging my Coopers, brand new ST Maxx and previously AT3s . My Y last set of Generals chunked out as they got older.

Thanks for the feedback!
I borrowed my buddy's 29er and went on a 5 mile ride this morning up in the hills and it was very smooth and comfortable but I felt like it was still too big of a wheel to really throw around. I rode a 27.5 before work this morning that my other buddy is selling and it was noticeably easier to maneuver. I think that sold me on a 27.5" since my goals of the bike is more for fun and less for workout and speed. The smaller wheel just felt more playful.

You can boss a smaller wheel around turns and in technical sections a lot easier than a bigger wheel, but just like a surfboard the more nimble the less stable. If your goal is just general riding without any specific purpose then just get what's comfortable and affordable
