going to big bear today, and although I have a 4x4, I read that I don’t need chains, but that I’m required to have them with me. Anyone know happen to know how strict they are on checking to see if you have chains? Looking around online and doesn’t seem like many places around me sell chains.

In all the times I have been up there, I have only been through a chain check point once in snow conditions. It was level 2 conditions, but they just looked at my 35’s and waved me through without confirming if I had chains in the vehicle. There are 3 chain condition levels and you are supposed to have chains on you even with 4x4 and snow rated tires, but you will never actually have to use them because when it gets to level 3 (chains required regardless of 4x4) the roads get closed anyways.

Bottom line, you just need to have something that looks like a tire chain to hold up at a check point to get waved through, but you will never actually need chains with a 4x4.

Damn wish I knew you were going, I have a set of chains for stock tires you could have in your truck to “show” them you have some

Yeah it totally slipped my mind until this morning, appreciate it though. I went and bought some and will most likely return them after today.

You’ve ever driven around neighborhoods in icy conditions. Especially up in big bear a lot of the homes are on steep hill sides. 4x4 is not enough sometimes

Damn it was almost dry enough to fix my alignment and then it started raining again. Undercarriage is clean though, took a run to the store earlier in the middle of it.

IDK man. I work in Mammoth everyday and have for 15 years. In that 15 years I've never had any road conditions that 4x4 with good tires couldn't handle sans chains. Sure, I carry them in my rig because I travel through chain control stops often but I've never once put them on.

Really? I’ve struggled before when my truck was stock (on 31 bfgs)
Couldn’t even make it up my buddy driveway it was like a ice skating rink. Parked down the road a ways as did a lot of other people

There's always work for qualified carpenters here. It's an easy move. lol

Bgs suck balls :noidea:

Yep. Such a highly rated tire but they are pure shit in snow or ice.

Pretty much I wonder if he ever gets bored of it. My favorite highway

The Sierras are the reason I moved here. I will never get tired of looking at them. They are the most impressive range in the lower 48. Especially when viewed from the East Side. Bishop to the top on Mt Tom is almost a 10000' foot gain. It's about 8 miles as the crow flies. That is some major vertical relief.

If I could find a way to make a decent living I would absolutely move there too. I’ve always preferred the east side though the west side has much more forest land. The last couple years I’ve failed but my favorite campsites in rock creek canyon are my ideal getaway, wheeling aside
