I looked up a couple knives mentioned and now I have found more shit to add to the wish list. I carry a small beater knife at work (Warehouse day to day usage) that I don’t care about messing up, the CRKT Drifter. Big 5 special for like $15! Now interested in higher end knives to EDC outside work. I like the mini Griptilian since it’s smaller/ sleeker. I don’t think I could use it at work for fear of damaging the blade but it’s a nice knife.

That Cold Steel Code4 I have is pretty nifty.
I know it’s irrelevant but it makes for a decent throwing knife if you’re ever in that kind of situation.

Just looked it up. You like lock back knives? I like 1 hand open/ close so the cheap frame locks with a thumb stud were always my go to.

I’m looking at the Boker mini Kalashnikov as a daily beater that I leave at work since conceal carry with auto knives is 2” (or under 2”?) max length in CA. Even the mini has a 2.5” blade. An auto would be pretty convenient for constant use in the Warehouse for me I think, and that knife is only $30 shipped at Blade HQ. I wouldn’t feel bad about abusing it at work like I would an $80+ knife.

For whatever reason, I can't stand the Kalashnikov. I don't know why but it just bothers me. The nice thing about a nice knife is you can abuse it without it getting destroyed. Just abuse it the right way. Don't use it for screwdriving or prying. Don't cut shit against metal or concrete. Avoid cutting cardboard. I've found that it really doesn't even make sense to cut cardboard when you can easily cut the tape on boxes and fold them up much more efficiently.

Also, I am not a huge fan of auto's or assisted open knives. I find them to be more of a hindrance than a benefit. A good knife will open just as fast as an auto with a flick of the wrist, thumb or finger. And if you really want to open a knife fast, look into the Emerson wave knives (Kershaw and Spyderco both have Emerson wave models for a cheaper price than a real Emerson blade)

But for a CA compliant auto, check out this Kershaw. It has a CPM-154 blade steel and meets the CA requirements.

My favorite locking feature on a knife is the Benchmade Axis lock or the Spyderco Ball Bearing lock (Same basic thing different companies). 2nd is the Spyderco Compression Lock on the PM2.

I use my beater CRKT Drifter to cut tape, plastic strapping, shrink wrap, etc and only pry on small staples out of paper so I do abuse it a little. I don’t use it for cardboard and use a dedicated box cutter of needed. The damage to the blade occurs on boxes I cut the tape and there’s also the huge industrial staples that are like 2” wide that you don’t always see because they’re sunk into the cardboard. It wreaks havoc on a blade quick.

Auto only seemed interesting because it opens fast for such a cheap knife. My CRKT has a lot of resistance but it’s also a cheap knife so it is what it is. The blade is also hard to keep a decent edge on. The Axis lock is only a feature on more expensive knives unless I’m overlooking something. I’m looking at the Kalashkinov for a beater work knife and the Benchmade Bugout or mini Griptilian for a nicer EDC outside of work.

The Kershaws seem to have such thin blades, which is why I was drawn to the Boker because of the blade design. It just looks more stout like the last 1/2” would take more abuse for my usage.

Admittedly, I haven’t looked too closely at the Spiderco’s but I’ll do a little more looking around to see if they have something up my alley.

Do you sharpen your own blades at all? No matter what knife you get, you'll want to get a decent sharpener to keep up on the edge. If you are ever planning on investing in a higher quality blade, it is totally worth getting a good sharpener. I use the Spyderco Tri-Angle sharpener. Works well, and I have the diamond stones for when an edge is really messed up. I used to be really good at keeping my edges razor sharp, but I've been pretty lazy over the last year or so about doing it. The more often you do it, the easier it is to keep it razor sharp.

The blade on those are definitely not very good at keeping an edge. Definitely get what you pay for in that regard. If you really want something that will hold an edge, look into something with D2 steel. Those blades last a while and can hold up to abuse, but they are also just and much of a pain to sharpen.

Just depends on the specific model. Some of them have thicker blades if that's what you are looking for. A well built knife with the right blade design doesn't necessarily need a really thick blade to be strong. Too thick of a blade just makes slicing more difficult.

Spyderco makes some great knives. They are definitely a little different looking than most knives with the leaf shaped blade design and large thumb hole, but they perform great. Just buy what fits your needs and budget. Don't be scared to spend an extra $25-$50 on a nicer blade if you know you'll be carrying it for years. That $25-50 will make a big difference on quality of the knife in most cases.

We should really have a dedicated Knife thread lol.

Who the fuck am I kidding? I have not given a fuck about CA compliance for years now. These fuckers go too far on everything now.

Actually California knife laws aren’t even that bad. The only ones that suck is the 2 inch limit on autos and no concealed for fixed blades

Which is funny because my knife is always technically concealed. Blade in pocket, clip outside pocket. I know I can get in trouble for it, but I try not to get harassed by the PD. I got pulled over on the 91 right before the 60 back in January because my tags were 2 months expired (I paid for them, and just smogged the week before but it didn't show in the computer) I had any number of knives that are kept in the runner within arm's reach, but he never asked me if I had any weapons or drugs, so I didn't tell him.

I’ve been pulled over and had that cold steel on me.
I keep my wallet in my cargo pocket and had my knife clipped on the same pocket.
Told the officer “I have a folding knife on the same pocket my wallet is in so I’m going to pull it out and let it fall to the floor, ok?”
He says, “no problem”
Then I got my $260 ticket for 9mph over going down a hill with no one within sight around me.

Yep. Unless* I suspect they're going to pull me from my vehicle, which has never happened, I just keep my fucking mouth shut.

I may or may not have had a loaded gun between my seat and center console while talking to a ranger through my passenger window once too. We don't run into rangers often, but when we do, we make sure they can't see what we've been doing. :anon:

Dirt roads, middle of nowhere, blah blah blah. I've run into a ranger twice in the last 3 years of wheeling. It's rare where we typically go. Chance of running into tweakers is higher than rangers. Also edited my post, if I'm gonna get yanked I'll absolutely declare what I've got. If not I'm keeping my mouth shut. I think I actually had my XD when I got pulled over in January, but it stays in a locked case on pavement.

Edit: in the most recent case I saw the ranger on the side of the road, slowed down, radioed the group, and made the conscious decision to stop to talk to him. If we had blown past him he may have rolled us because a couple of us were rocking high speeds. Also gave me an opportunity to ask about trail conditions further down the line where we were headed.

You carry a fixed blade?
it’s stupid about the law being only about concealed, you can legally carry a samurai sword on your back and that’s totally legal, but putting one in your pocket is a crime... talk about stupid. No length limits on any knife besides autos. No dual edged knifes, buttery/gravity knifes or daggers either. Our laws are weird but not very practical.

Cops just cant search you or your car without permission if you're minding your own business. Also been stopped plenty of times and had a knife they usually just take it cause I use to carry good spring loaded knives before
