Steering rack support question

Batting around a couple different options for adding additional steering rack support brackets and have a question: what would the downsides be of a rigid mount to the frame? Maybe a thin rubber sleeve to wrap around the rack to protect it from chaffing...

Unless someone talks me out of it I am going to take this route for an extra support to try and cut down the lateral movement of the rack.

Should be an ok idea.

On the cars I work on professionally (my day job) the racks are solid mounted to the cross member, the cross member solid mounted to the unibody, and the steering linkage and tie rods have no rubber joints. I've also wondered if the 4Runners are set up the way they are for urban comfort, or if some shock absorption prolongs the life of the components offroad?

I say go for it. ;)

worst case is impact loading will wearing the rack out faster since these trucks comes stock with 31s. I might do that rack slider down the road to help out that issue.

When i solid mounted my upper and lower steering shaft the road shock was crazy. And the thing was falling apart after running dusy ershim trail( probably wasnt a good idea to test it on that trail.lol)I imagine the rack bushings on the cross member absorb some road shock as well. If you solid mount the rack youll probably have premature failure of upper steering shaft rag joint due to the vibrations you may get.

Did you go back to an oem rag joint on yours?

I am still going to have the stock rag joint. This would just be for the rack.

Hard to quantify without doing it.

What's a rack slider?

I'm not sure why that would affect the rag joint - isn't it supposed to act as a vibration dampener?

you said 'magic rubber'

He's been slammed - secret projects and whatnot.

Not that slammed, he's keeping up on the IG traffic well enough, hahaha.

Figured he was busy if he wasn't on the forum. Takes a bit more work to keep up with this place sometimes.
