I have a 3.4 and r150 that I have to store, what are some basic strategies for long term storage, besides just keeping the elements and vermin out. I intend to refresh this motor, but for now it can't live inside the garage. It's on a pallet outside under a tarp, the rats are a daily treat, but my question is more about wether it should have oil in it and to how best store it internally?thanks

If you're gonna refresh it, I'd pull the plugs and put oil in the cylinders and put the plugs back in. That should at least keep those from seizing. Other than that maybe coat it with wd-40? I've never stored a motor but everything tells me it's gonna rust if you leave it outside long term.

My watercraft I coat the whole thing in wd40 before the winter. Check out fogging oil too or equivalent. The trick is coat it all with a water displacing oil. Pull off any wires to help against small animals. Seal up intake, exhaust coolant from dirt and allowing moisture inside.

Put some Marvel Mystery oil in the cylinders and turn the crank a few times to get a decent coat on the cylinder walls. The bottle looks like this below. The motor oil will all settle in the oil pan anyways, so I just drain it to avoid any accidental spills down the line. Wrap the entire thing in shrink wrap. It is possible to not use enough shrink wrap if it is outdoors and exposed to the elements, but it is not possible to use too much, so use enough to where you feel confortable that it is plenty covered up.

I have stored several that way for extended periods of time with no issues.

Thank y’all very much the poly wrap and mm oil are definitely helpful suggestions I didn’t think of. These are all great “best practices “ type suggestions.
