Confidence the feeling before fully understanding
Well I hadn't planned on adding another 4runner to the fold but an opportunity came up yesterday to pick up this 1989 SR5 4x4, 22re, 5speed. The listing was sent to me by @97t4r81 and at first I didn't really think I would get it and I knew my wife would be resistant to adding another truck to the fold but through some negotiation and sweet talk I went to look it over this afternoon. The body is super straight even though the paint is horrible, and there is no rust anywhere. It needs a lot of cleaning and a fair amount of maintenance as it runs rough but I drove it onto the trailer.
I love 1st gen 4Runners and this will be the 4th that we have owned. My oldest son will turn 10 in December and that means we will have 6 years to build this together for him. The plans for the future are to get it mechanically really sound including A/C, upgraded brakes, etc. So that it drives well no matter where he drives it, around town, on the freeway or over some of the toughest trails in the country.
Then:
Solid axle swap with a full width front Axle.
Rear axle swap to full width 4th Gen Elocker axle.
Dual Cases
Elocked front and Rear.
Stretched wheelbase to 110-115"
35-37" tires.
The great part is that most of the parts to make this happen are sitting in my storage right now.
