Plus, I’m aware the carrier on the elocker is weaker than the stock carrier, but really how much weaker compared to the arb?
These prices are without tax and only include the wires and connections. No welding goggle or welding rods.

I didn't bother pricing 1/0 because it is overkill. Or that's what you told me. lol

If we use 2 gauge it's $165.
If we use 4 gauge it's $135.

That's for the whole thing so divide that by 2 and that's what we'll each be paying. We should have done this a long time ago.
Yeah that’s more along the lines of what I was thinking. Shit we should see if anyone else wants to go in on it to divide the costs more on the cable. @Tetten?

It won't drop it by much. More then 1/2 of that cost is battery terminals, ground clamp and electrode holder.

So 2 or 4 gauge?

Should get a ready welder and their upgraded alternator and carry a 25/75 gas mix bottle for some serious shit.

How long are you making the leads? Setting it up for 2 batteries or 3?

Onto the question. What do you guys know about the Bow River and Ghost River valley's?

I've been up the Ghost River Valley a few times for ice climbing in the winter and I know the access has changed since I've been there (at least in the GBU area). Generally, in the winter (Dec 1 to Mar 31) it's open for 4x4 past the junction and all the way to the wilderness boundary. I've been up to GBU in the 3rd Gen 4Runner and a 90's Previa both. Having to torch the ice off the brakes at 40 below is not fun, BTW. Don't ask me how I know. Summertime though that area is closed after the junction.

I had some spindles delivered from B&R Auto Wrecking. They have this cool feature where you can make an offer on parts. The donor was a 98 4Runner V6 Auto 4x4 ABS. They where asking 78 a piece. I offered 35 a piece and they accepted. With shipping that put the total at 128 bucks.

So all I have left to do to have a set of spares incase one of my welded ones fails is get SPS Upper BJ's for $100. Get a set of LBJ's. I'm pretty sure I'm going against the grain here and saying fuck OEM with how often I break shit. So those will be AC Delco at $35 a piece, that includes the bolts. Then I might as well order some spindle gussets from TG for another $35.

So far the LBJ bolt failure has cost me 40 bucks for welding those bastards up. The total replacement parts will be in the ball park of $335 for a fully drop in welded spindle/LBJ. Not bad.

might as well slap on spare wheel bearing/hub assemblies on your spare spindles while you are at it.

No. Have you ever replaced wheel bearings on a 1st gen Taco/3rd gen 4Runner? It's not as easy as it is with the 2nd/4th Gens. You have to press out the old bearing and press in the new bearing. Wheel bearing failures very rarely happen on these rigs so the work isn't worth it.

How do you replace the spindle without replacing the wheel bearing too?

The bearings are pressed into the spindle hub. You just take the axle nut off, pull the caliper and rotor, pull the UBJ, pull the LBJ bolts, then pull out the spindle.

Got a link to that thread? I'm welding these but for future reference it's be a good bookmark. The one that held everything together stretched a lot more then you would think grade 12.9 would. I'm actually lucky it did or the whole wheel would have been on the ground.

I don't think the design is weak for what Toyota intended it for. We are pushing 5" larger then factory tires over obstacles that a normal rig will never see. The stresses we apply on a weekly or sometimes daily basis for exceed anything an engineer designed that system for. We are the ones causing these failures.

We need to come up with a solution for our needs. Currently my solution is welding them shut. lol

Figured I'd stop by here and start adding to the fun.

Blew my first diff over the weekend in Moab, broke a U-joint too but that's not very exciting. Don't have pictures of either but the diff will be getting swapped out sometime next week and I can see what carnage I have ensued.

Drove it the 400 miles home thankfully...
