Well it's not trail carnage but street carnage. It's still impressive as fuck and a testament to how bullet proof Toyo U-joints really are.

Last week I was pulling out into traffic in my 96 Taco with 350000 miles on it. I didn't see a car in the turn lane I was crossing so I got on it fucking hard. Spun the tires, felt a tiny bit of axle wrap and kept the RPM's pegged from 1st into 2nd. I pulled away safe and sound. Except the truck had a little more vibration then normal. I drove a mile home and forgot about it.

Saturday my wife took the Taco to go climbing. About 15 miles of dirt. Today I hop in it to take it to work. I notice it's vibrating like a very large adult toy but keep driving. 45 miles of highway at 75 MPH I'm at work. I take a quick peak underneath and notice a completely fucked rear u-joint. Fucked to the point that it's bent at 20 degrees and the bearing cup is split open on the inner end. The yolk and flange where almost touching that's how bent it was.

So I did my normal thing and rolled the dice. I drove home 45 miles at 70 MPH on that same joint. I made it. I'll pull the rear slip yolk this week and see how wallowed the flange and yolk are. I'm hoping to get away with just a new u-joint. I doubt that both the flange and yolk aren't wallowed to hell though so I'll see.

That coloration is from heat. It got really fucking hot. lol

That's impressive. Probably welded the cups in place. Good thing it held up. I just drove past a drive shaft laying on the highway. I actually said WTF out loud.

No, that’s just stupidity.

I can tell from here that it was worn out for months, possibly years.

although you were probably enjoying the vibration. Pervert...

It's only stupid if the gamble doesn't pay off. It did because I very rarely loose a statistical based gamble.

If by press you mean a 1 3/8" socket, an 11/16" socket, and a BFH then yes it will be a lot of fun. lol

Say it ain't so man. At least RENT a press from vato zone or something. I just adapt my ball joint press but it's better than mushrooming your sockets with the bfh.

Impact sockets don't mushroom. They either take it or they explode. Trust me..

This guy almost sounds like he knows what he's talking about.

All you need is a hammer and a bench vice. If you use anything else you’re doing it wrong..

My bad you're right. What do I know I'm just a mechanic. Guess they just make the proper tools for fun then.
That’s the different between you and me. You’re a mechanic. Im a tech. A red seal journeyman tech, if you really want to get fancy.

If you think the “proper tool” is the only or most efficient and effective way to get the job done, you’ve got a lot to learn.

Two broken shafts this weekend. The other was just your run of the mill bearing cage blow out at the outer cv, but this one take the show! twisted off like clay at the outer stub shaft in the hub.
