@eimkeith just picked one up just like this.

well, kinda - I got a 2004 S this weekend (paid 2K). It needs a clutch and a bunch of deferred maintenance things, but it's already a riot to drive. I'll probably be into it for 4500 when it's all sorted.

Chris, is the one you picked up a CVT or manual? Apparently the CVT was the big Achilles heel of the first generation models.. Also, from what I can recall from my shop days, MINI caused a lot of the issues with their ridiculous annual oil change policy; I'm going to do 3-5K oil changes on mine going forward.

Mine is CVT. Easier transition for the girl. I read that as well. Watch an overhaul guy on YT repair one and it seems fairly straightforward if it ever needs it. Only a couple of clips that seem to be hard to find.

I ordered a new power steering pump and a couple of seals and I’ll start there, changing the oil pretty frequently as you described. No idea what’s in there now, but will use synthetic as called out.

I could dump a bunch a money into it replacing corroded parts, or I could just leave it alone knowing it’s for a 16yo and accept that it’s going to run into things.

yeah, I'd just baseline the fluids and make sure it has brakes and let her at it, lol.

It was an impulse purchase. And after getting under it and looking around, probably paid too much for it. The guy we bought it from didn’t know what he was doing, either, although he did replace brakes and tires. It is what it is now. If the girl gets to school and work, it’s worth it to me to not have to haul her around!

hey, my first car was a volvo brick. drove, turned and stopped like a brick but it make it from point a to point b without the ability to break land speed records or win fashion points. It had a/c that you had to turn off to go uphill. Bonus points was station wagon and back seat folded down and has seat belts for 7.

She's a million points ahead, that car stops, goes turns when you provide input and looks good. The volvo, if you wanted to turn you had to start turning a mile beforehand and hope the car agreed with you, more of a suggestion input. I didn't crash that car because my dad would have hurt me more than any damage the swedish brick tank would ever incur. But that's why both my brother and I started in an essentially caged brick on wheels.

My first was a 69 VW Beatle with no seatbelts. All 39 hp from the 1600cc was good to get you to 55mph downhill. At those speeds you had to downshift and open the doors to slow down, because the 4wheel drum brakes weren't good for much.

On a dirt road the front end broke and threw me into a slide, I over corrected and the rear went into a ditch and hit a culvert. It rolled 2 times. My mom celebrated when she found out I was ok. She hated that car.
