Welp... I installed the 250 AMP alternator without issue. The grinding noise definitely came from the alternator bearings.

I also did the “big ONE” wire upgrade. A short length of 6 gauge from the alternator stud to the battery positive terminal.

New Gates idler pulleys arrrive tomorrow. I’ll install those together with a new serpentine belt.

Also ordered the tensioner pulley assembly and water pump. Not sure if I really want to install those. I’ll prob wait until @Arcticelf and I explode the front end of my truck to fab a new and improved radiator core support at the end of the month

Here’s a good write up on pulley/belt with part numbers.

Here’s a good write up the alternator replacement. It’s in TW, written by a banned member, Kevin @nj636
I get my hubs from him.

I used 2 ga/2ga lugs all around and had no issues. But no experience with second gens so... best thing you can do is get like 30 ft of wire and make it all based on the old harness.

Alright, I figured this might be as good of a place for this 'tidbit' as any other. Typically, and as referenced above, there are a lot of electrical recommendations when one major component is touched. As we all know one ugrade seems to have a trickle-down effect too.

SO, if you are looking for either a dual battery or some other reason to have a second battery then I'd like to offer up a product for consideration - because its f'n small and powerful. The Odyssey PC925 and I would buy it at FCP Euro if it were me (they have a lifetime replacement policy, even on consumables... as long as they are in business) https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/automotive-battery-powersport-kit-odyssey-pc925mj#qa

I have the bigger brother to this battery in my WK2 Diesel and its a beast. Will eventually replace my T4R with the same brand. I like this little guy as a secondary because we don't have a lot of room in our trucks (3rd Gen) for a dual setup but this takes no space (~7"x7"x5") and it comes with a hell of a hold-down kit.

No personal experience with the little guy mentioned, YMMV.

A little pricey but with the hold down kit, and space/weight savings it seems like a very worthwhile upgrade. Kinda makes me wish I went with a smaller battery when I moved mine to the cargo area.

Yeah the cost is a rather large bite to take, but I also factor the power per cubic inch and (again as long as they stay in business) the lifetime replacement...

Wonder what kind of AH that thing has. It's lighter than the marine deep cycle I have for my house battery.

If you're going to do a multi-battery setup, for the sake of all the gods and little fishes, move the fuckers out of the engine bay.

I can't think of a weaker point on the truck to mount a battery than where it is from the factory. The older trucks can move them to the passengers rear corner of the engine bay, which is much better, but still sucks.

Put them behind the rear seats, in the bed, anything.

:rofl:you would cringe at how my house battery is set up, but currently no cracks or bending and I've done some stupid shit over the past 3 years that involved catching unintentional air.

T4R seem to have fewer problems, my buddy has almost no cracking issues, doing the same dumb shit I do and ripped mine to shreds.

On my 3rd gen, my battery basically fell through the fender well. The entire fender well almost fell out but a couple spot welds and the frame caught it.
That’s why I went with an engine cage and put the battery in the rear.
