I hate to do this on my own forum, and I already have the opinions of my local group, but I thought, I guess I need a little more peer pressure.

2010 with 27k miles. 4wd, off road and tow package. This was my grandpa's truck. It would be a mild build for things such as death valley, Mojave road, Joshua tree, etc while the 4runner becomes a dedicated local trail rock crawling rig vs long distance travel road trips. So shocks, leafs, sliders, and ifs skids. It would be my "overland" exploring rig. Bed rack, rtt, fridge slide in the back seat, etc.

I checked the 4wd hi/lo and rear diff. They all work.

I'd have to sell my prerunner, the Jetta, and get a loan to cover the 8-10k that this truck is actually worth. I have about 2 weeks to make a decision.

Does grandma need the money? You know you could sell that rig for way more then 10K. If she does sell it. If she doesn't buy it from her for the grandson discount.

I would pull the trigger. It’s nice to have a dedicated fun vehicle you don’t have to worry about breaking Sunday morning and having it fixed by the evening to drive to work Monday. And bonus it’s a pick up so you have the bed to use and 4x4 for fun times.
Does your Jetta smell like crayons because my 2003 Jetta did

The truck is worth 19k nada. 20-23k market. I'm sure I could get it for 19ish. My Tacoma is worth 8-10, the Jetta is worth 2-5 if I find the right buyer.

It's 97 TDI, so the value is a little different. They're rare vehicles in southern California and there's no smog required. So it can be converted. @Hold My Beer & Watch This you wanna buy my TDI for 2500? I know you want this motor. Hahha.

Also no grandma doesn't need the money, if anything it goes into the trust and eventually gets split out to my aunt's and uncles after she dies.

Point 2 is that this goes to Robbie in another 6-8 years when he starts to drive. So it continues to be in the family.

Thanks for clarifying that. I thought you where going to sell the other rigs and give her 8-10k. Giving her blue book value would be fair, IMO. How much debt do you want to take on and how important is it to you that your grandpa's truck stays in the family? The debt itself isn't a huge deal but having debt and looking for work might way on your psyche a bit down the line. I'm assuming this thing is paid off so why not do a debt free loan through grandma? Give her half upfront then 500 a month. She might bite on that idea.

That's a possibility if I can get 10-12k between the two vehicles I need to sell. I'd rather not owe the "family" money if she dies though so it makes more sense to get a loan to cover the difference. I could drain my savings instead of getting a loan, but that puts me further back. I've got another 4 months of unemployment and severance, and I'll have my resume listed by the end of this week.

It's not so much about keeping the truck in the family as it is the opportunity to pick up a low mileage 4wd. I always planned on a 4wd swap or LT on my 2nd gen Tacoma.

Then buy it. Your are not going to find another 2nd gen with that low of mileage for that price. Ever.

I would love to have that engine. There is no way for me to currently justify it if I am serious about moving to Kentucky.

Plus, so far it seems like I did a halfway decent job on my rebuild of the 22re. Just ran compression after a couple oill changes and maybe 50 hours and all 4 cylinders are tits.

But as far as this thread, definitely buy it and dump the prerunner. It is just you and Robbie, so that access cab is way more useful than a 4 door. And with just a locker you can get through most obstacles if you are selective.

I'll never crawl this Tacoma. If anything it makes me start looking at SFA which I swore I'd never do to the 4runner.

I'll have my resume posted this weekend, because the sooner I get offers the sooner I can make a decision. Think I still have another 5k in unemployment coming in which would cover at least half the loan.
