Total Chaos Spindle Gusset Brake Clip Relocation Question.
Got some TC spindle gussets welded on and something that I'd been meaning to address has been in the back of my mind. And NOW I remembered.

What did you all do about the clip that holds the hard line on the original spindle? Did you fab another mount point? What did you use?

I read in rickashay's thread, https://www.toyota-4runner.org/3337729-post60.html over on T4R, that he thought that others used longer Tacoma stainless steel brake lines, getting rid of the 4runner hard lines altogether. Has anyone gone that route. If so, what would keep the lines out of the way and from catching on something?

If things go well, I might be transplanting my old build to the new rig this weekend. So I am trying to tie up all these loose ends before I take my ride apart.

We reused the original bracket for the most part. Just bent it into shape to make it line up. Make sure you mount it though. @Itaro and his family could have died when his hard line snapped because we put it off. Or zip tied it. Or whatever we did. Either way, major fail, close call, everyone survived, we fixed it, and continued on.

If the gussets are done correctly the hole will line up and you can reuse the bracket. I think I did have to get longer hardware to compensate.

The hard brake lines can be massaged (bent) into place.

Edit: I just realized what section this is in. Not sure if the brackets can work with the gussets on your spindles. They likely will but you’ll probably still need the longer hardware

I see on the other page that a few people are ditching the hard lines and replacing it with Tacoma braided steel lines. They say that they come with a clip that can be attached to the spindle by drilling a hole to mount the clip that comes with the line. As long as it is mounted out of the way, it might be nice to ditch the hard lines. https://www.toyota-4runner.org/3456518-post3.html Pic in link for reference.

Am I correct when welding these things that people are pulling the bearings and etc. out first?

I just zip tied mine down, no issues so far, but that is a valid concern I think

The hard line snapped at the caliper where it goes in. We had to flair it out as a temporary fix to get back down the hill we were just going up. Fortunately it snapped while going uphill because we were about to hit a steepish down.

That sounds like there was something else going on. Flex line too short maybe? Where the hard line bolts into the caliper is a stress point for sure, but not way the line should be under enough force to brake bailing wire.

It's hard to say. We had a few trips on it before it snapped. My guess is that the flexing of the rubber line on the hard line as the brakes go on and off was enough to just wear it out after awhile.

I think it was just the vibrations with being unsecured that cause it to break. Metal fatigue

I've got close to 10K miles on my zip-tie solution. But the bailing wire would be subject to failure the zip-tie isn't.
