Ok ladies and gentlemen I want to see what everyone has to say (and a little roast).

Last month I replaced the timing belt on my 05 4.7 V7. I got a kit from Rock Auto (mistake but that’s another story) with the belt, water pump pulleys etc. During reassembly of the thermostat housing there is a gasket and says to use Toyota Seal Packing 103 (FIPG). I had some Permitex Right Stuff and planned to use that. Well dummy me it was all dried up. Then I saw I had some Permitex blue RTV so I used that.

The other day I popped the hood and saw coolant sitting in the valley. Upon further research I found out the blue RTV won’t withstand the heat and/or coolant and breaks down (learn something new everyday).:headwall:

What does everyone think of Toyota’s 103 FIPG “Toyota glue” vs Permatex Right stuff, Permatex Ultra Grey or ???? C9487E93-73EE-4AC4-A76C-48EE5B57658C.jpeg

I saw on the internet supposedly the patent on Toyota’s was not renewed many years ago and Permatex cloned it or something like that.

Obviously I can get the Permatex at any local parts store. Amazon has Toyota’s stuff but I won’t get it for 5days.

I never looked closely into different sealants so I think I got lucky. I just went off a clymers repair manual since I never had the FSM. Third party manuals will never say you need to use the toyota brand products. The grey stuff has been my go to for years just because I can use it on a lot of different things and has pretty good specs.

I use FIPG. it's great until you get it on your hands. I've also used Hondabond and Yamabond in the past; I think all 3 are better than what you can get at NAPA.

Most of the "use this brand" is for warranty purposes. Stealerships will have and use it for everything. When I worked in a chevy garage, we used the GM glue for all makes and models. It didn't matter what we were working on.
