Ordered a new welding hood last night. I've been using my Miller Performance for the past 8 years or so. It doesn't darken enough anymore even on max darkness and I can tell it's been effecting my eyes.
Some things I haven't really cared for on the Miller is while the head gear is comfortable, the hood doesn't want to stay up at all. When I first bought it there was what felt like a detent to hold the hood up, but that quickly went away and the only thing I can do is keep tightening it which just makes things worse.
Obviously the lense not darkening all the way has been pretty shitty. I can probably solely blame my vision getting worse on welding and this hood not performing properly doesn't help things. (should've bought a new hood years ago when I started noticing max setting getting worse).
This time around I decided to try a Lincoln Viking 3350. Large lense, better clarity (so I've been told), 4 sensors, exterior grind mode button, better head gear (supposedly). Hope it comes this weekend. I'm hoping to build a new welding cart. The HF cart I was given is pretty shitty and I'm over it. Plus I need to make room for a plasma cutter on the cart.

Miller Elite has some bad ass headgear. Nice hood but I like my Panoramaxx better. I do want to see if I can swap in the Miller headgear though

Have a respirator? do your lungs a solid too. 3m cartridge masks are available again on Amazon. Cartridges are all over the place price and availability. I'm a former smoker and holy shit talk about stupid decisions, not taking care of my lungs. Anything now I start wheezing, wouldn't wish that on anyone, don't care if I'm being a meddling nanny.

I've heard good things about Optrel stuff online but never seen one in person which made me a little weary of buying something that expensive. The headgear on the Elite and Performance is the same from what I remember. It was comfortable but the lack of detent to hold it up while working on things drove me absolutely nuts. I got pretty good at just leaving my hood down all the time when I was a production welder. For actual fab work, it sucks balls.

No I don't but I really should get one. Got any recommendations on one?

n100 for dust and debris (metal prep), welding you'll need something for vapors, probably the organovapor cartridge or the acid/base ones. lemme find out the cart #s

The Speedglas helmets are nice for dual purpose since the welding lens flips up with the clear finding shield behind it, but holy shit are they pricey

slick. id get that if you could. does it have a PAP attachment?
Never used one and haven’t looked into what’s compatible with it. I have a Miller Pro hobby and use a small Miller respirator I got for around $30 at my LWS (Matheson Gas) but I have to switch out a face shield when grinding. The Speedglas would be convenient if something fits under it.

Dusted off my hood and replaced the batteries. At some point this weekend I’ll be setting up a Miller 211 that just came in today. My workbench and surrounding area looks like a bomb went off so that will have to be taken care of before I can do a damn thing.

I’m so stoked to have a welder again!

Single car garage, lots of shit packed tight around the work bench. Shelving, surfboards, fishing rods, junk, etc. Not much bare wall to paint at this point. Plus the fact that I hate painting with a passion. So there’s that.

Nice!! That's the welder I have and have been super happy with it. I'm guessing you got the newer version that is inverter instead of the transformer style?
