From past posts, I’m getting the impression that the 3G 4Runner is the preferred mount for those off-roading them. What gives? What makes them special? Apparently I’m driving a minivan 5G, so curious what’s the hype.

Cost, size, capability, clearance.

They don’t cost $30k+, so it’s a good platform to build something you don’t mind beating up a bit.
They are small enough to get into tight places easily without bashing your shit.
Some came from the factory with the E-locker, and some have the multi-mode tcase which allows for 2wd, 4hi, 4lo, and AWD; which is nice for people that like to drive on winter mountain roads.
Stock, they have better belly clearance than the 2nd gen, 4th gen, and 5th gen.
Tons of aftermarket support over the last 20+ years.
Did I mention cheap?

Assburns nailed it. Factory clearances, size and locker sum it up. Cost is just the cherry on top now that they’re old. I wonder how 5th gens will be when they’re 20 years old because of the electronic nannies. The size will always be a hinderance.
